Orientation of Publishers & Printers on Unicode, FOSS & Wikimedia Projects at Kolhapur

Background

The publishing houses play important role in knowledge sources production and dissemination. The publishing houses in Marathi language are not very well versed with free and open knowledge movement. The practice of using commercial fonts and software is regular. Therefore the searchability is rare in online content. They are not using Unicode and open source applications. There is also copyrighted content which is out of print with these agencies. With a view to introduce them to open knowledge platforms, we started dialogue for the last 4 months. Through these initial discussions, the need analysis and status was documented. We collected queries and difficulties in adopting open source fonts & software.

Event details

The extensive discussion on the needs, difficulties and future expectations was conducted. After this, the demonstrations of Unicode based fonts, alternative open source programs for commercial programs for designing & printing, requirements for e-book, future changes in publishing business were presented.
