Proposed Participation[edit]

ISMB is the largest annual meeting in Computational Biology worldwide and hosted by the International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB). There have been two important collaborations between this community and Wikipedia to date. Firstly, the ISCB's journal PLOS Computational Biology have created a series of articles through which high quality new Wikipedia articles are being created or stubs rewritten from scratch, and they published a paper by members of WikiProject Computational Biology on how to edit Wikipedia. Secondly, ISCB now hold an annual competition to improve the quality of Computational Biology articles. I am involved both ways - as editor of the Topic Pages and as a member of the contest's judging panel. The ISMB conference have agreed to us running a Wikipedia tutorial (as one of only two tutorials), which will be advertised to the estimated 1,500 conference attendees. A similar tutorial took place at ECCB (the European equivalent to ISMB) in 2012, with Alex Bateman and me as tutors.

Goal and Expected Impact[edit]

This tutorial is aimed at increasing participation in Wikimedia projects, as aligned with the WMF strategic priorities, particularly among the computational biology community and related researchers. Attendees at this international conference can bring new expertise to multiple language Wikis in addition to strengthening existing English Wikipedia collaborations. Specifically, we will highlight ways in which the Computational Biology community and the wider research community already collaborate with Wikimedia projects, e.g. the Topic Pages, the contest, similar contests run by other communities (e.g. Biophysics) and Open Access publications as a prerequisite for the Open Access Media Importer.
