Context and Justification
[edit]The Wikimedia Community User Group South Sudan, under construction, was active during the year 2022 & 2023 in the movement through the organization of several activities. The organization of the WikiIndaba Local 2023 event in South Sudan aimed to provide this emerging community with an opportunity to learn about the movement, its principles, and projects. The event, held in Juba, was designed to enhance the capacities of Wikimedian volunteers in South Sudan and attract new members to the community.
Tasks performed during the workshop
[edit]The training covered the fundamentals of contributing to Wikimedia projects, focusing on Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Commons. The Wikipedia workshop included the following key points:
- Brief overview of WikiIndaba and its objectives
- Presentation of the Wikimedia movement, its founding principles, and projects
- Introduction to the Wikipedia environment
- First modifications on articles
- Use of tools such as references, internal and external links, and categories
- Taking a photo and uploading it to Commons
- Creation of user pages and addition of user boxes for participants
- Assisting participants in creating Wikipedia accounts
- Registration of participants on the event link

Participants successfully created their accounts and gained awareness of the importance of contributing to Wikipedia. Participants uploaded images and edited articles.
