From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Goals[edit]

Did you meet your goals? Are you happy with how the project went? Despite encountering challenges such as a power outage in northeast Nigeria, we are pleased to report that the program was a success. Despite falling slightly short of the target number of new editors due to the outage, we surpassed our goals in terms of the number of events organized, participants engaged, and new uploads generated. The program effectively enabled community members to contribute quality images and participate in this year's Wiki Loves Africa. We are happy with how the project went, and we consider it a success based on the achievement of our set goals.

Learning[edit]

Projects do not always go according to plan. Sharing what you learned can help you and others plan similar projects in the future. Help the movement learn from your experience by answering the following questions:

  • What worked well?

1. Engagement and Participation: The engagement and participation from the community exceeded our expectations. We successfully organized two events and a photo walk, with more participants than initially targeted.

2. Capacity Building: The training sessions effectively equipped participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to contribute quality images to Wikimedia Commons. The hands-on approach during the photo walk was particularly beneficial in reinforcing the training.

3. Content Contribution: Despite the challenges, we were able to exceed our target for the number of new uploads. The quality and quantity of multimedia files contributed were commendable, showcasing the creativity and talent within our community.

  • What did not work so well?

1. Technical Challenges: The power outage in northeast Nigeria disrupted our plans, affecting the ability of some participants to sign up for the event page and hindering the achievement of our target number of new editors.

2. Communications: There were instances where communication regarding the program schedule and logistics could have been clearer. Improvements in communication channels and strategies could enhance the overall experience for participants.

  • What would you do differently next time?

1. Contingency Planning: In anticipation of potential technical challenges or unforeseen circumstances, we would develop robust contingency plans to mitigate disruptions to the program.

2. Improved Communication: Enhancing communication channels and providing clear, timely information to participants would help ensure better coordination and participation in future events.

3.Adaptability: We would emphasize the importance of adaptability and flexibility in our approach, allowing us to adjust quickly to changing circumstances and better meet the needs of participants.

By reflecting on these aspects, we aim to enhance our future projects and contribute to the continuous improvement of similar initiatives within the Wikimedia movement.
