Research:Mobile Strategy Research/USA/Notes/092301
- edf non profit corporate partnerships
- 1/2 day in meetings, researching ideas to take to wmart. 70% at a computer. if i'm travelling, very infrequently at night. thursdays - meetings.
- borrowing friends bikes, bought one myself last night.
- excessive in researching, craigslist, used bike store. my friend went with me last night. he was my research tool.
technology[edit]
- never taken laptop out of house. gf's laptop got stolen and she borrowed mine. i rarely work on the weekend and one time i had to write a blog post and i took it to a cafe. roommates have computer, don't use them.
- chrome - gmail. click on the first two or three sites - if not helpful, close them down.
- opens three new tabs before he looks at any of the links. if wp didn't come up, i probably wouldn't seek it out. i never go to wikipedia.org and search that way, wikipedia just always comes up.
- GOOGLE MAPS BACK TO WP PAGES OF THE PLACES?
- google images - to check out a place. gripe "summit lake" it's hard to know if it is.
wikipedia[edit]
- likes the contents (table of contents) layout - that helps me figure out if this is going to be a useful site
- ctrl-f weather
- good reference maps
- sometimes i find images helpful.
- i have a good amount of faith in wikipedia. i'm not super techie. i take everything as is on wikipedia. that's maybe why i like it so much.
- i use wikipedia as a launching point.
- copy a bit of text - does new search in lieu of clicking on internal links.....even if it does take him to a wikipedia page.
- CONTEXTUAL LINKS (as internal links).
- uses references. for "fibrowatt" but also google searches fibrowatt. i'll look for academic journals. might be a little more neutral...
- i suppose i have blinders. doesn't notice anything outside of the main content area.
- time, quality level, what do i have to add.
- i go to wikipedia when i'm trying to learn stuff. so what would i have to add?
- click on edit and i would think, what the fuck is this. i would be really hesitant. this is kind of intimidating.
- maybe it's because i hold wikipedia to such high regard. the vast majority of time it is the accurate source.
other activities[edit]
- blog at work.
- i have a one way relationship with the internet. technology and social media is not my thing. i have a facebook page but....people get mad at me.
- close friends family member had an emergency....then logged into facebook.
- if someone makes a comment on a photo i was tagged in.
- work blocks pandora.
- if i posted a review of something it's not because i was happy with it.
- sf chronicle - read the comments, sometimes i'd post but then they required a log in and i didn't care enough to do it.
- nytimes, espn.
- facebook to use pictures.
phone[edit]
- phone jokes. my friends make fun of my phone. yeah, this is was their first touch screen.
- reason for buying it: smaller environmental impact, small, cheap, replaceable.
- one the main things i'd do on my phone is txt. why does it so many steps to txt someone.
- predictive text - i have to go to options. scroll down, go to abc.
- 6 page load, you have to click go to next page. don't like it. want it to load all at once.
- metro pcs - unlimited calls and txts for $45. assume internet is unlimited. is prepaid.
- have to click the next page so it loads before i go under the tunnel.
- particular article - that stuff i save for a real computer.
- biggest paint point - piecemeal loading.
- other websites: nextmuni (bookmarked some of the lines i use more frequently).
- if i didn't have friends with smart phones would i need one? they are supporting my non-smartphone habit.
- there are not that many things that i need on the internet that i can't just wait for until i get home.
- looking up a question at the bar is nice but not that essential.
- choose load type?
- call someone and ask if she's in front of a computer.
- even this keypad is a reason to not do anything on this phone. might actually go to WP, one less step.
tries to go to wp[edit]
- goes to google, searches. would give up scrolling down search results.
- no ctrl-f
- delete to start a new search
- "that's cool i guess you can do the language thing there"
- new search at the very top.
- get rid of all of the "extras".
- email?
do you text, given the pain it is? photos music links in sms? send someone a wikipedia page?
follow up[edit]
- excessive research for phone?
- other stuff on the wikipedia page.
- corporate partnerships
- wikitravel?
