Research:Mobile Strategy Research/USA/Notes/100602

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki
  • work 55 hours a week, banker
  • run a lot - running marathon this weekend, gym, church
  • a lot of involvement in my work
  • grocery shopping - my mom was big coupon clipper

use of tech[edit]

  • leave 7am
  • check phone to check train/bus
  • desk at work - don't usuallly take lunch
  • home at 6:30 - out, in, girlfriend, church, grocery shopping, tv movies
  • my bank blocks a lot of internet sites - so i get them through my phone. youtube, gmail, facebook (but i don't use it), linkedin.
  • groupon, wsj to and from work, sometimes during lunch.
  • phone out with friends
  • i'm an information guy, i look things up when i don't know them right away.
  • we use ie6, i check balances and use my phone almost exclusively for that....
  • out or not at desk 25% of the time
  • work emails now coming to my iphone "good app"
  • so now i don't need to carry around my blackberry
  • iphone - typing is hard, mistakes, surprised that they let us have them. didn't use blackberry phone - just for email. keypad was better, bbm - instant messenger. work blocks bbm. bbm seemed more handy - you can tell when people read your messages.
  • never had any apps on the blackberry. bbm, txt, calling, pictures. internet browser.

cross device[edit]

  • computer takes too long to fire up
  • more detail - bank statements
  • looking at documents
  • brings home laptop 1ce or 2ce a week. only in case i get an email about work, needing to look at documents.

other internet activity[edit]

  • always a reader, hardly ever a commenter. chicago breaking news -> chicago tribute. reddit.com, dealbreaker (banking blog), send photos through email, or over txt.
  • zero music on my phone.

wikipedia[edit]

  • good relationship - gets dissed a lot for accuracy.
  • sometimes there is a lot of info i have to filter through but sometimes i also need the details
  • i've probably been using it since college. more reliance on it lately - things changing more. need more info on things i don't know.
  • google first - original issue discount - first is wikipedia. just need the first few sentences
  • consistent, organized, a lot of scrolling.
  • if i want to learn more i'll use refs - not necessarily for accuracy
  • generally blue links are more basic terms - more out of curiosity.
  • i have not contributed and would not know how to do that. my level of involvement is reading.
  • investopedia ....assumes you know a little bit about something already. wikipedia is going to break it down. wikipedia works so much better.
  • google results.....read links and piece together. edu.
  • computer: readability > org (need something quick and to know where it is) > reference/audiovisualaids/links not so important.

wsj[edit]

  • phone wsj app. computer - yahoo finance.
  • had an account, didn't renew.
  • maybe once have emailed an article.
  • message boards - too much time, write random stuff

mobile[edit]

  • apps - groupon, groupon now, wsj, work email (good), no wikipedia apps. it's actually pretty easy to use, not too much information at once and i can scroll to what i need. that's why i haven't downloaded the app.
  • if i needed it all the time for a very specific purpose.
  • i generally go to google first. wikipedia or investopedia. terms, jargon. those are the most reliable sources to me. those give the best summary of what i need in the quickest format possible.
  • wasn't able to look at websites on my blackberry
  • not formatted correctly. mapping - need to get more detail. scrolling in and out.
  • location based _ around me, zarleys, foursquare (barely), maps

mobile wikipedia[edit]

  • use safari browser and google bar
  • SEARCH RESULTS DIFFERENT ON COMPUTER + MOBILE
  • photos - give or take
  • ADVERTISE FOR AN APP ON THE MOBILE OR FULL VERSION
  • CHECK ELSEWHERE LINKS IN WIKIPEDIA MOBILE
  • previews
  • OTHER GOOGLE SEARCH RESULTS

follow up[edit]

  • if wp wasn't/isn't the first do you look for it
  • if not wikipedia, how would you find that info?
