- But what if the decline is due to sucky newbies?
- So we did a study
- Randomly sampled the first edits of newcomers since the beginning of Wikipedia
- Hand categorized (screenshot of newbie coding tool) the edits of 2100 users.
- We found that (Somehow wrap three plots into something that can fit in a blog post)
- Newbie quality hasn't substantially decreased since 2006 (before the decline)
- But we do see rejection rates for good-faith newcomers rising
- We also see a dramatic decline in productive newcomer retention at the beginning of 2007.
