Default settings

I've been trying to find out what the "defaults" are, and why Mediawiki doesn't automagically point them out in the prefs-panels.

I made a dense post, combining all the details I've found out so far (not many), at User Preference descriptions - Where stored & changed, and where documented? - How to mark the "defaults"?
