Translator's notes - Deryck Chan

The translation is aimed to be dialect-independent, with preference towards Hong Kong and Taiwan usage for technical jargon. The English original is often left inside a bracket for Wikipedia-specific jargons, such as the user access levels. In cases where a word's usage in English has ambiguity, the German and Japanese (the other languages he can read, other than Chinese and English) versions are often consulted for their interpretations.

Introductory questions

• "Country" is translated as "國家或地區" country or region, as PRC, Taiwan, Macau and HK are usually considered as separate entries in such surveys.
• "Nationality" is translated as "國籍" citizenship.
• "Primary language" translated as "母語" mother tongue.
• The education background question seems to draw the dividing line between primary and secondary education at the age of 14–15. The equivalent (by age) school years in the school systems of China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau are listed.
• D3b is translated using Jerry Mann's suggestion. Thanks Jerry.

Section 1

• "Volunteering" does not exist as a verb as Chinese. It is translated as "以義工身份[...]" [...] as a volunteer where applicable.
• Q4a: mediation and arbitration do not exist as set processes in the Chinese-language Wikipedias. Examples ignored.

Section 2

• Q9: micro-blogging services. Sina mini-blog (新浪微博) is included as an extra example where sites "such as Twitter" are mentioned.
• Q11: The question's grammar (modal verb as question word) doesn't translate. Consulting the German version, the entire question is rewritten to mean "Do you do the following things using social networking media?"
  • "Like" content of newspapers is translated to Like content of newspaper websites.
• Q12: "Twitter" is interpreted as "micro-blogs such as Twitter", as per German version.

Section 3

• Q25 (hardest question to translate in the entire survey)
  • "unpleasant experiences" is translated as 不愉快事件 unhappy events
  • "Stalking" does not translate into Chinese. It is replaced by 騷擾 harass
  • Comparing to the German version, "content" in "inappropriate messages or comments on my user page or content" is interpreted as "encyclopedic content that I contributed"
• Q27 (things to do with sexual connotations are inherently difficult to translate into Chinese)
  • "userspace (user, discussion pages etc.)" is translated as "user namespace, including user pages and user talk pages"
  • "sexualise" does not exist as a concept in Chinese. The option is changed to (approximately) mean over-populated by [sexually] inappropriate content, innuendos, and [sexually] explicit images? ("inappropriate content" should cover the "etc." part)

Section 4

• D21 "Global South" is translated 發展中國家 developing countries, as is conventionally used by Wikimedia Hong Kong in all Wikimedia Foundation press releases using this phrase.
