Scanning old books

This is the start of a discussion of how to use wikisource to publish and proofread scans of old books. As such an endevour is perhaps a major change in the scope of wikisource this might best be discussed here on meta. User:LA2 has on his user page started a brilliant discussion about this subject (in the subpage "Digitizing books with MediaWiki"). He has also started by publishing two works. One on the german wikisource (Meyers Blitz-Lexikon) and one on the english (The New Student's Reference Work). These two works show the possibilities for wikisource to become a real free library. I think that we need a discussion of the implications of a larger endevour to scan works and publish them on wikisource (methods, size of scanned images etc etc). Please feel free to discuss the subject on this page!
