Secret Agent: Women in Photography Edit-a-thon at Guest Projects

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

In conjunction with the exhibition Secret Agent, a group exhibition composed from the viewpoint of feminist authorship in contemporary art practices, participants are invited to gather together to edit and create Wikipedia entries on women in history of photography.

The sub-heading - Women in Photography - is borrowed from the popular conference meeting held at Tate in November 2015. This edit-a-thon is inspired by artist's practices of redefining and revisiting histories at the Secret Agent travelling exhibition. It also follows up active edit-a-thon events to balance the male dominated authorship and subject matters on the Wikipedia. For example, Art+Feminism had over 1500 participants and created nearly 400 new pages in 2015.[1] However, we would like to open both a discussion on the process of making history, making such an endeavour available to a wider, general public. Our editorial hub at Guest Projects, London will facilitate participants in gaining a working understanding of wikipedia, further empowering them to create and expand our collective knowledge on the history of women in photography. It will also take advantage of the internet's freedom of access to invite participants from all over the world to make histories available to people. Subjects include biographical information on artists and their exhibition/publishing histories.

Conflict of Interest[edit]

Result[edit]

Patrizia Savarese (Rome, 1953) is an Italian photographer.

She initially attended the faculty of Architecture in the 70s and graduated with a diploma in Interior Design, and later obtained a second diploma in Photography. She began working as a show business photographer, snapping the most famous international rock stars at concerts and tours in Europe.

In the 80s, known as one of the best rock photographers, she started working in the fashion and advertising worlds.

A research study on black and white nudes won a particular acclaim: she was one of the very first Italian photographers to concentrate on the male nude. This led to a series of TV interviews and in the most important photography magazines, as well as in newspapers and websites.

Today, Patrizia Saverese is considered one of the most original photographers in Italy. Winner of two recent prizes, throughout her career she has been invited to offer her photographs at various auctions, including high - profile fundraising events. She has been involved in two auctions for the Luc Montagnier Foundation in Montecarlo, attended by Prince Albert and Princess Stephanie, together with 50 of the most famous photographer in the world. Her photographs have entered the Fine Art circuit and gone under the hammer at Christie's and Sotheby's auction houses.

In the last few years, Teuco Guzzini commissioned Patrizia a research project based on the theme of water, for his company calendars. These dreamlike and refined images were featured in leading Italian broadsheet newspaper (the 2002 Teuco calendar was judged the best of the year). Amongst others, she accepted an invite from the Polizia di Stato (Italian State Police Force) to participate in the creation of their 2004 calendar, together with other major Italian photographers.

Denis Curti, critic and former director of the Fondazione Italiana della Fotografia wrote about her - " Patrizia places herself in the middle of the road between a hallucinatory, dreamlike state and the perception of another reality, always filtered by the delicate and fragile power of water and, naturally, by the consciousness of her extremely personal vision [2]". Roberto Kock of Agenzia Contrasto wrote – “ The principle characteristic of Patrizia’s work, other than a special sensitivity to light, is her constant creative dedication to the construction of images, to which she applies a planning methodology derived from her previous experience in the architectural field” . What often emerges from her photographs is the contrast between the artificial and the natural. This adds a new perception of reality which transports everyday objects to unreal situations.

Recently, Patrizia has taught at the IED and held a workshop at the Tuscan Photo Festival.  Since 2005 she has also restarted photographing show business artists. At the international event Orvieto Fotografia 2006 an untitled film of her photography was shown. In Italy she is represented by the Agenzia Contrasto, and in the USA by the Nile Tuzun Gallery in San Francisco (CA).
