Strategy/Wikimedia movement/2017/Sources/New Outline

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

The below outline lists all final deliverables for phase 1 of the Wikimedia movement strategy process. Track C, now referred to collectively with Track D as "New Voices", was tasked with engaging individuals, organizations and institutions in countries where Wikipedia already has high-awareness. Track D was focused on low-awareness countries. The goal was to actively engage these groups to hear what they had to say about the future of the movement and lay the foundations for future engagement. Tracks A and B were focused on research on and for affiliate groups and individual contributors to the Wikimedia movement, respectively. There final deliverable research documents are listed in a separate section. At the end of the outline, high-level reports completed throughout phase one are listed.

Phase 1 summary reports[edit]

Over the past 10 months, several high-level reports encompassing several or all tracks for phase one of the movement strategy have been completed. This section lists out these reports, which can serve as executive summaries of the work produced for the movement strategy.

New voices high-awareness research resource list[edit]

The below section lists out all final research and reports produced for the New Voices research in high-awareness countries. Formerly known as Track C, this side of new voices focused on engaging current and future movement members, partners and experts in higher-awareness countries.

Affiliate hosted salons[edit]

Description[edit]

As part of the process in engaging experts across high-awareness countries, we developed a rapid-grants style program for Wikimedia Affiliates and User Groups to host salon style feedback sessions, dinners or meet-ups with experts and partners in the affiliate's home country. This program was co-managed with Track D, who focused on low-awareness countries. In total we funded five affiliate-led salons in high-awareness countries.

These salons were hosted by Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director Katherine Maher, and they brought together a diverse group of experts and leaders for a dinner and structured conversation on the future of Wikimedia.

Wikipedia awareness, attitudes and usage survey research[edit]

Description[edit]

As part of Wikimedia 2030, the Wikimedia movement’s global consultation to define its future direction, the Wikimedia Foundation contracted an online Awareness, Attitudes and Usage survey with internet users aged 13-49 in seven high-awareness countries (defined as countries where the Wikimedia projects are more widely known or used). The research was conducted by Wellspring Insights & Innovation, Inc. This survey complements the research conducted in lower awareness regions by Reboot, an ethnographic research and design firm, as part of Wikimedia 2030 and the New Readers research.

Trend analysis research[edit]

Description:[edit]

To grow the movement's understanding of the wider context in which it exists we engaged two research firms, Dot Connector Studio and Lutman and Associates, to complete several trend analysis briefs. These briefs focus on specific topic areas that were selected by the researchers in consultation with staff from across the foundation. In addition to the briefs, these researchers presented to the Wikimedia community at Wikimania in Montreal and worked with Wikimedia Foundation staff to conduct open-ended one on one interviews with a variety of subject matter experts interested in contributing their vision to the future of the movement. All of their work is summarized in a final trends report.

Deep dive design research[edit]

Description[edit]

This research, sponsored by the New Voices movement strategy team, was a continuation of the new readers research completed by the foundation in 2016. The goal of the work has been to better understand new internet users in countries with developing internet access, who may have limited to no awareness of Wikimedia sites. The design research firm Reboot Inc. was hired to partner on this project.
