vs JPEG XL and what programs generate it?

@User:Lt2818: what are your thoughts on supporting JPEG XL too? Also I thought that I'd mention that Lightroom and darktable seem to output AVIF so that looks good. Commander Keane (talk) 02:47, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Still seems to be the case that Safari is the only browser so far. I did hear that Firefox was adding support soon though.

Community consensus

I think the biggest thing that would move this forward, would be to have a vote on Commons:COM:VPP showing community consensus for enabling the new format. As it stands, it is unclear whether the community wants this format enabled. Bawolff (talk) 16:29, 25 April 2026 (UTC)

Generate thumbnails as AVIF

This initiative is good. AVIF has many advantages over older formats, especially much higher compression efficiency.

I think that MW should allow generation of thumbnails as AVIF, even for JPEG, PNG and other formats. This would save considerable bandwidth and potentially storage space (for thumbnails storage) for sites with a lot of pictures.
