Thank you @Hamelton for sharing this wish and to @Ahecht for supporting it. I understand that CropTool is really important in the commons community, and that CropTool was initially built as a community-maintained tool.

Live cropping

The best solution for this problem would be to add live cropping into MediaWiki. The crops are then created when adding a file to a page using parameters or when requesting a file using URL parameters. Then we only need the original file and every internal and external reuser can decided what crop they need. GPSLeo (talk) 14:58, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Note that Wiki Project Med has forked CropTool and is planning to maintain the fork long-term

There's still some work to be done around making this the default on Commons. @Hameltion and @Pppery perhaps if you supported the proposal on https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Village_pump/Proposals that would happen quicker

I think it should be set to delivered once the issues have been solved. If the new version of the tool solved these, then yes. Directly in the wish this 1 problem is named: it's been having issues lately, such as timing out when trying to load photos with this metadata attribute In the pages linked I think further issues are named. However, the wish creator failed to name them so it may be best to set this as delivered once the new version has been set if it solves this 1 issue and ask for a new wish to be created if there are any remaining issues in the new tool. Croptool has now been replaced on Commons by Croptool2, which is a fork maintained by WikiProjectMed. I think we can consider this wish as "done"
