Out of scope
[edit]In my honest opinion this page is not a technical wish or something that could be introduced on all wikis. With al due respect it seems like yet another local community problem thus rendering it out of scope for a technical wishlist. A local resolution should be achieved on the affected wikiproject. I suggest that an admin/community wishlist maintainer closes this wish down as invalid. Best, A09|(pogovor) 08:48, 28 July 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, it is clearly out of scope in the technical sense. But it is the “Community Wishlist” after all! There must be a way to make this wish visible. Thank you @Timwi! 2dk (talk) 19:56, 30 July 2024 (UTC)
Thank you
[edit]Hey @Timwi - thank you so much for this well thought out and considered problem. I've spoken with many new editors who share a similar concern.
As @A09 shared, this wish mostly reads as a "policy problem" in that each wiki has their own set of rules which govern how new edits are treated. Through this lens, we'd technically "archive" this wish.
Still, there is a "product problem" in that most new edits are reverted, and there is potential to improve this. I'm curious if there are specific elements of the product that could be reconsidered to soften the policies you've called "arcane?" JWheeler-WMF (talk) 21:39, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
an opposite argument
[edit]The notability guidelines does what it wants: to make sure only topics that have enough information to write about get written and appropriately cover neutrality. For other things that are verifiable but not necessarily notable, we have Wikidata.
I'd also need some more detail on the apparent hostility of NPP? NPP has explicit guidance to only delete egregious violations. Articles with contestable notability that have a claim to significance are not deleted outright as Timwi characterized; most notability actions solely involve draftification. Not actionable, not techncial
[edit]This wish likely won't go anywhere without an actionable technical suggestion. The wish should be rewritten to propose an addition or change to software. The wishlist is unable to change English Wikipedia notability consensus. In general, fan wikis such as Fandom exist to cover topics that do not make it into the mainstream publications (newspapers, books) that English Wikipedia bases its RS, V, N, etc. policies and guidelines on. –Novem Linguae (talk) 09:42, 6 February 2025 (UTC)
