@Sabelöga thank you for this wish. Could you describe a bit more about the problem of not seeing the table of contents in VE Vector 2022? Perhaps share an example page where it would be helpful, and why? JWheeler-WMF (talk) 14:59, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

@JWheeler-WMF The problem being that some times I want to use it when I'm editing between sections or over an entire article. After all, it's shown and appearantly useful fo readers. Why is it hidden for editors? Sabelöga (talk) 19:12, 17 July 2024 (UTC)

Proof of concept

hi @Sabelöga – thank you for filing this wish!

The Editing Team has created an initial proof of concept that would enable what we understand this wish to be requesting:

1. Enable people using the Vector 2022 skin and editing using the visual editor to see and use the table of contents
2. Have the table of contents update in real-time as people make changes to the section headings that appear within it

Can you please give the above a try and share what – if any – issues you notice with it?

@PPelberg (WMF) Yes, this is exactly what I was asking for. Some observations with the proof of concept:

• The boldening, that highlight where on the page I'm reading, doesn't follow in editing mode. When I select a section in the table, that section becomes boldened in the tabel. But with the first scroll the boldening defaults to the top "Beginning".
• The table of contents is not visible in wikitext editing mode and when switching from wikitext editing mode to visual mode the table of contents is now shown.
• References in sections are shown in reading mode but not in editing mode.
• It does update the table automatically when writing a new section and correctly moves me there and does not break when adding new sections and afterwards selecting a old section further down or anything similar as far as I can see.

I made some edits to the test article by that created a temporary account. Everything worked smoothly. Sabelöga (talk) 22:10, 26 November 2024 (UTC)
