Talk:Foundation website meeting, July 2004

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Listing agenda items below if anyone wants to clarify their suggested items before the meeting. What is meant by 'Skin changes', is 'subdomains' distinct from issues of multiling, is email conf distinct from anon issues...

I've attempted to answer those questions, if you have any others please ask. -- Tim Starling 03:56, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Agenda items[edit]

Draft agenda

1. Tools & Presentation

  • Meta vs. separate wiki
  • Wiki vs HTML - or HTML-enabled wiki?
Allowing people to contribute to layout & content without knowing HTML?
No. Rather making it possible for people who do not know HTML well or at all, to also participate to this step of Foundation building. We could try to avoid preventing people to add content based on their ability with programming languages. Anthere
  • Enabling HTML for forms
  • Skin changes
    • Some changes to the site layout have been proposed, this would involve changing the MediaWiki skin. For example, changing the links in the sidebar. -- Tim Starling 03:56, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

2. Access & Content management

  • Email confirmation
    • There is some disagreement as to the degree which this site should be restricted. Should it be editable by only Board members and their representatives for the purposes of official announcments, or should it be a freely editable wiki like all the other wikis? Email confirmation is one point on that spectrum, where users must log in and have an email address confirmed to be valid before they can edit. Many sites use this kind of access control. -- Tim Starling 03:56, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Shell access
    • HTML web site might imply that only those with shell access can update it.
  • Approval of pages
  • Marking of unofficial pages
  • Permissions: anon/ user/ sysops/ account creation

3. Multilingualism & I18n

  • Interlanguage links
  • Translating the sidebar
  • Managing translations
    • (Managing languages -- defining the language of a page)

4. Other issues

  • wikimedia.org versus wikimediafoundation.org
    • What are the arguments in favor of each?
      • wikimedia is simpler to type, but represent more than the foundation itself.~~
  • Developer bounties (for related software changes?)
    • Yes, there was a suggestion to pay developers to do this work -- Tim Starling 03:56, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)
  • Subdomains
    • The issue is whether we have a Wikipedia-style site, with a separate subdomain for each language, or a meta-style site, where we have all languages in the one wiki. -- Tim Starling 03:56, 23 Jul 2004 (UTC)

Well, where can I find a log of the meeting? It should be somewhere on meta, I can't find it. 192.16.189.192 12:07, 29 Jul 2004 (UTC)
