Talk:Longest page protections, September 2005

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

de.wikipedia[edit]

Thanks to Erik for his demonstrative overview. Especially the german subsection badly needs an update now :-)

The mail and this list were the crucial factors for APPER and me to delete lots of needless placeholders tonight (we haven't noticed them before; a relatively new feature on de.wp: protected templates to prevent vandals to create a certain page with nonsense, spam or copyvio again and again - this was, of course, the main reason for the high number 253 of long term protected pages). We both also unprotected around 100 pages - this second largest amount of protected pages derived from past edit wars with two already banned users which lasted over weeks/months (all the articles related to German student corporations and political stuff, which Erik mentioned). And at last, some other pages were also just forgotten - as in some other projects.

So don't worry too much about long term protections - such a problem is resolved quickly if someone announces it at the right place. Erik's mail lead to a good point and - hopefully or certainly - we have less long protected pages than en.wp now (I guess, less than 100).

Hm, perhaps we will adopt the idea of a more clear policy and a template for every protected page/a category where all protected pages are in. Additional, have a look at the two related feature requests please: MediaZilla:861 and MediaZilla:2171. --:Bdk: 08:55, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for cleaning up. For the record, when I ran the script, there were 40 entries in the placeholder category, bringing the number of non-placeholder protections to 213 -- still substantially more than any other Wikipedia. I think your and APPER's effort shows that, when the problem is made more visible, it is more immediately solved. For problem articles like pedophilia, perhaps at least a link to the editable temporary version could be visibly inserted.
I'll run the script again on September 21 to see how much the situation has changed after a week.--Eloquence 18:15, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hej, not so important, just for your records: If there were only 40 "Gesperrtes Lemma" articles, how could I have deleted 34 [1] and APPER another 30 [2] placeholders whereas about 20 entries were still left as current placeholders in the category then? ;-) I think the point could be that the category was first created on Aug 29, and of course, we had have some placeholders which were tagged without category. Anyway, such a cleaning is essential. --:Bdk: 19:57, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I only looked in the category, thanks for the information. So there were 84 placeholders, bringing the amount of "real" articles protected for more than two weeks to 169. That's quite a substantial difference.--Eloquence 20:21, 14 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
