This is somehow what I would like to see :-)

I would rather put political borders in black, city names and country names in black as well for readability.

Water in white or very clear blue.

Colors in a limited number of shades. Enough for readability, but avoiding violent colors such as red or purple.

Why are there overly continental examples? I would suggest that you also include samples of locations that are mostly water (archipelagos), so that you can compare colors and contrast. Try Indonesia, the Philippines, or the Carribean (those with lots of little islands).
