Talk:WikiWomen/Mangaluru/Meetup/1

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Background[edit]

Karnataka is a unique state as far as language is concerned.
It can be a model as a multi-lingual state for unity and diversity, where we support all languages and their unique varieties in dialects.
We often refer to a language as a mother tongue ...something that is taught nurtured and nourished by a mother, a woman.... and yet at most forums for language discussion, we find that women are conspicuous by their absence.
These local MeetUps and this space will provide an avenue for women in Mangaluru to come together to lead this effort of digitising content, so that it can be accessable to all the different language groups of the state.
Some languages like Konkani that do not have their unique script and have relied a lot on oral transmission and continuation of their cultural heritage, do not have vast documentation and the digital age and Wikipedia presents a wonderful opportunity.
