Talk:Wikibooks/Logo/Archive 5

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Just FYI[edit]

fi.wikibooks.org is using the new logo already, in the Wikimedia colour version. —Nightstallion (?) 12:27, 12 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

...and without the rounded spine, I see. Has anyone informed them that this is inappropriate? —David Levy 06:46, 13 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like they've Been Bold. Given then length of time this vote has been going on, I can't say I blame them. --HappyDog 14:42, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
"Being bold" doesn't mean defying explicit instructions from the Wikimedia Foundation. If this was deliberate (not a misunderstanding), I do blame them. —David Levy 21:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Also, seeing it in context, I would strongly suggest that the book is filled in white, so that the background doesn't show through. --HappyDog 14:42, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed. —David Levy 21:20, 15 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
My God! You people have no idea of what Wiki foundation is about. It's about community decisions and you guys probably don't even contribute to Wikibooks let alone Wikibooks Finnish! Let the Wikibooks communities decide what logo they want and stop fucking about! 213.230.129.21 00:07, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Um...no. Individual project languages aren't entitled to select their own logos. This is a Foundation-level issue, and there are specific, policy-driven reasons why that version of the logo was officially deemed unacceptable by the Foundation. —David Levy 00:20, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Moved from the content page[edit]

This is just a joke! Any new Wikibooks logo should be decided by the Wikibooks community and most of the people commenting here don't even have an account on Wikibooks. If there is a need to change the logo (and maybe there is) it should take place on Wikibooks. Stupid votes and decisions by Wikimedia only discourage people from contributing to the various projects. Let's end this discussion now and keep it closed until the Wikibooks community choose to initiate it! --213.230.129.21 00:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC) (Xania from Wikibooks English and Wikibooks Simple English)[reply]

Wikimedia project logos are selected by the Wikimedia community. This certainly includes Wikibooks users, who were invited to participate in the creation/selection of this and other project logos. —David Levy 00:20, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yes but hardly any Wikibooks users know about this vote taking place behind their backs. Why do you feel it is the position of lofty Wikimedia users to make this decision for us? Will you guys grow up and realise that as it is the project users who will have to use this logo then it should be they who make the decision. Very few of you will ever have to see this logo again after you've finished voting. Wikimedia is often seen as amateurish and a joke by many people and this kind of thing just proves their point. Why don't you move this vote entirely to Wikibooks so we can decide for ourselves? Any stop moving my comments to the talk page - my arguement has every right to appear on the module page as everyone else's supporting comments! Xania 00:29, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This vote is not at all taking place behind Wikibooks users' backs. *EVERYONE* was informed well before the vote started through the site notice at the top of the interface. —Nightstallion (?) 18:05, 11 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
If the vote is in en:wikibooks. What should the another langues do. Meta is more equal.--Tigru 06:19, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
He! The vote can't be on en.wikibooks, because there are also other wikibooks: List of Wikibooks
And when you look at b:Wikibooks:Decision making (High impact decisions), you can't vote, they want a consensus. And thats the joke about this discussion: No discussions and no consensus ...
An other problem of a vote on en.wikibooks is, that the other languages projects can think "How cares what's voted on en?"
So the vote must be here under the rules of meta.
-- MichaelFrey 07:44, 4 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Allow each language version of Wikibooks to make up their own minds. Why should they all be the same? Do we want Wiki projects to look as sterile as any other commercial website? Wikibooks English DO NOT WANT this logo and enforcing it upon us will just piss us off. I'm so happy that this discussion has gone on for so long and I hope this means that the proposed logo change will soon be abandoned!213.230.129.22 20:08, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Start votig[edit]

Why we dont vote. It was ages ago when this started so can we vote soon please. Finnish wikibooks use the new logo because we didnt know, that it wasnt ready. Should w chance it to the old logo. Editor of fi.wikibooks. --Tigru 14:05, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, please restore the old logo. The Wikimedia Foundation has explicitly forbidden the use of the red/blue/green version. —David Levy 16:29, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Done ! Thanks and let us start the voting very soon.--Tigru 19:43, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! Indeed, I hope that something comes of this soon. —David Levy 01:07, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Old vs. new[edit]

IMHO it would make sense to have a final old vs. new vote before this is officially implemented. Is that already planned?--Eloquence 05:42, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Although I don't see the need for such vote, but I think we better do it once we choose the colour to use. when the vote for the colour begin? the last inquiry was a month ago..are there any reasons why we shouldn't start now?--The Joke 20:16, 8 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

End the vote[edit]

There's been too much time since the original vote so this can't be implemented anymore. Also too many changes have been made and the vote is not being decided by actual Wikimedia users. Do you just want to piss off ordinary Wikibooks users with your dictatorial ways? Xania 20:02, 2 July 2007 (UTC) (Admin on Wikibooks English and user on Wikibooks Simple English)[reply]

I think you're being awfully combative here Xania, and despite your insistance to the contrary there are actually a large number of wikibookians (including wikibookians from other languages) who are in support of changing the logo. Many people, including myself (also a Wikibookian administrator) happen to really like the new logo, and want the process to continue forward. Considering the stumbling blocks that have occured in the process I think it would be reasonable to ask that we restart the process from the beginning, but it is not acceptable to just quit the process entirely. --Whiteknight (meta) (Books) 20:08, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Well, Xania has a point, though it could be expressed more, um, politely. This has been dragging on for ages, and I (like Xania) get the impression that the delays aren't due to actual wikibookians, but rather due to those who like lurking on meta and voting on things because that's what they like doing.
Changing the logo is good. Making a big deal about how important it was that Wikibookians vote on/help decide the new logo, and then dragging it out for umpteen months is definitely not so good... and I speak as someone who would be perfectly fine if the foundation board just met up and chose a new logo and instituted it (as long as this wouldn't be a yearly occurrance). So Xania's point -- minus vitriol... sorry Xania! -- is that this process has so far yielded no result but that of pissing off a bunch of volunteers (a.k.a. editors and contributors). The hair-splitters and point-makers that have bogged this down should be ashamed of themselves. --SB_Johnny|talk|books 23:06, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not saying that it hasnt taken too long, but it would have been done in a reasonable time except for the unforseen problems. What has been taking so long here is not the devious meta-wikians, but instead the unforseen problems of needing to adjust the colorscheme at the last minute. Roadbumps, however, are not a reason to turn back and give up completely. --Whiteknight (meta) (Books) 23:11, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
OK so I should have been a little more polite and I've toned down my comments somewhat on Wikibooks and I would have done here also but doing so would cause disruption after people have replied to my original message (it would create a bit of confusion if I removed parts of my original message which Whiteknight subsequently addressed in his reply). My concerns still stand and too much time has passed for this to be considered as a valid vote. It is also the kind of decision that should be taken by individual Wikibooks projects - we want some originality and don't want everything to appear identical and this already happens to an extent with different alphabet representations of the 'Wikipedia' text and logo. The vote should still be ended and the proposed logos forwarded to each Wikibooks project for their users to decide. Xania 23:30, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't necessarily disagree with the sentiment, but we also have to consider whether the board wants a unified logo common to all the wikibooks projects or not. I mean, it may just not be possible for each individual community to select a separate logo, which would make such an effort moot. Before we make any decisions on the issue, however, we should ask the board. --Whiteknight (meta) (Books) 23:35, 2 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It's not the board. Rather, the Marketing subcommittee. See Talk:Wiktionary/logo/archive-vote-4#Changing colors --朝彦 (Asahiko) 07:27, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
According to Logo#Logo guidelines, "All languages have to use the same logo, logo changes are possible on a project level only, but not for one language." This implies that there are technical reasons why different languages can't have their own logo, although I can't vouch for the statement's technical accuracy - it was added last September and things might have changed since then (and of course, that is also assuming that it was correct at the time it was written!). --HappyDog 01:34, 4 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The reason is not technical as far as I know,[1] and as a matter of fact many Wiktionaries like the Chinese Wiktionary uses a similar but a clearly different logo. --朝彦 (Asahiko) 02:11, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
