I would love to have this! I'm an ex boyscout from Malmö, Sweden..

Somebody ought to specify formally what we need to do..

Similar Projects[edit]

There are already some projects out there that are similar to what you are proposing. The ones I know of don't use a wiki database engine, but the principle is the same.

  • bivouac.com - has information on hiking trails and mountaineering routes in Canada - there is a fee for full membership though
  • trailpeak.com - a trail database
  • VOC Wiki - my outdoor club has it's own public wiki which has some information about hiking, climbing and paddling in our neck of the woods. The Trip Ideas section is similar to what you describe as Wikirec.

What about Keyhole?[edit]

The people in the Keyhole community can post anything they want, anywhere on a collective map of the Earth, including recreation sites.

They were bought by Google so Google could create a 3d interactive map of the Earth (you can zoom in, see your house, visit landmarks, etc.), called Google Earth. Google Earth is free as of this moment, as well as NASA World Wind.

You could either join Keyhole or log onto these services, like Google Earth, and make a seperatre (Wiki) community. Making your own 3d interactive map of the Earth is thinkable, too, NASA might let you copy their map, but then you would need dozens of servers to hold all of the data about the Earth.

Just to let you know about Keyhole, etc., you could do something else.
