Making African neigborhoods visible

The WikiKwatt project is a project which gives us the opportunity to encourage the contribution of content related to the neighborhoods in Africa and upgrade their visibility on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

Vision

[edit]

"To bridge the huge content gap and make visible more knowledge about the neighborhoods in Africa, by getting historical background behind these neighborhoods into the main stream. This will be achieved by providing: images, articles and data about the historical background of the African neighborhoods, to be readily accessible both on and offline in different languages".

Overview

[edit]

There is much information about the neighborhoods in Africa, and there is even more to add about the history of these neighborhoods. Similarly, the same applies for countries in Africa, where this information has not been well structured from a higher view perspective. This makes it more difficult to have some structured/linked data from the information which has currently been provided on Wikipedia and its related projects. The Wikikwatt project aims to address this.

The main Focus here include; images of very popular places of neighborhoods(entry points), articles on the history of these neighborhoods and activating the similar projects in other existing communities/affiliates in Africa, and why not beyond? This project is designed to bridge the gap on Wikipedia and other projects, as well as to improve the awareness of these projects and the movement endeavors in the African countries. This will be achieved through varying methods, such as GLAM editing workshops, writing and upload sessions/contests, partnerships with relevant organizations and Government ministries, activating Wikipedians-In-Residence (WIR) in libraries of history institutions, and so on, using the help of existing communities/affiliates in Africa and beyond.
