From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Needs Assessment[edit]

Working with schools[edit]
  • CISK2 should reach to students. It is a necessary activity because rural students are still not aware about marathi wiki though they are learning in marathi medium schools.
  • We can conduct activity in schools/colleges to involve students it will help us to grow Marathi wiki rapidly.
Indic language collaboration[edit]
  • For inter-language collaboration, CIS can arrange small projects on various topics such as - similar words in different languages , words with same pronunciation but different meaning , translation of small tales about their culture, dances, music etc.
  • Cross-wiki Workshops or idea exchanges between different languages will give a boost for developing localised content. Projects implemented by one language can be replicated in other languages as well.
  • Frequent meetings of Indic wikipedians and building of a common platform would help to stay connected and to know how some communities resolved certain issues while localizing and adjusting with mainstream wikis.
  • CIS-A2K is working like a point contact for all groups which are working on Indic languages.
Quality and content[edit]
  • Editors from various walks of life should be encouraged to contribute to wikipedia in Marathi
  • More attention to be given to - Crowd sourcing concepts, Encyclopedic writing style, Importance of NPOV
  • More tools for fact-checking and citations on mobile platform ; Accuracy and verifiability of content
  • It will be a better strategy to involve experts rather than non-expert enthusiasts
  • We can approach instituions like TIFR, NIC etc that already have huge resources and knowledge banks
  • Organizations with infrastructural capacities to host frequent edit-o-thons, like weekly or something where the experienced ones can come and guide and new ones can join and others can contribute with the help of all of them. So giving it form of a collective activity would make them learn a lot for a while before they continue on their own.
Outreach[edit]
  • Focus on thematic areas with some legwork.
  • We need to reach to maximum of geography and not get to the themes as staying with few themes would mean staying in very small geographies.
  • Universities can be approached to give credits for wikipedia work of the students
  • Geographically it is better if training area is near to our training place to understand community view towards wikipedia
  • We need support of CIS-A2K for reaching to other communities. E.g. FAN( Fab Asia Network) for involving makers from Asia to participate in Wikipedia movement , Technical or social meets
Open Source and technical issues[edit]
  • CIS-A2K needs to go more into technical aspects of it, and try to bring more editors with advanced technical knowledge who can contribute to the core of indic wikis than just adding into the plethora of text
  • As making indic wikis technically strong should be the first priority of us now, it's being long that there have been no efforts to make it technically strong
  • Most importantly the very ideas of open source movement needs to be given to all of the potential active members of wikis, and then Mediawiki training on priority
  • Visual editor with mobile compatibility should be brought in for marathi editors, which english wiki is already trying to do.
Collaboration with Govt[edit]
  • CIS-A2K can guide the government on content development on a mass scale, provide expertise to build content that government already owns, sharing of various information with wiki-editors
  • A2K’s Role as expert and technical collaborators, advisers plus faculty for outreach programs.
  • short and concise training workshops.
  • A2K as Consultant on expertise and procedures;

Content Enrichment[edit]

WEP[edit]

Wikipedia has good readership among students of all ages. The needs of this community could be assessed well by themselves. The integration of academic skills with encyclopedic content generation would be mutually beneficial for students and Wikimedia projects. In Marathi Wikipedia, there is a large gap in content related to basic science concepts, biographies, major historic events and places, social science issues etc. Due to inclusion of e-learning facilities in the schools, infrastructure is available to initiate Wiki projects. The students are expected to learn through digital platforms and multimedia. Also, in college-level technical courses, Free & Open Source Softwares (FOSS) are part of syllabus and projects. The assignments based on these requirements would be designed with faculty and experts. The participants can become good editors in long-term.

Objectives[edit]

  • To integrate academic assignments and Wikimedia projects
  • To increase readership and application of Wikimedia projects in schools
  • To build feedback process in Wikipedia to enrich content & quality

Plan[edit]

  • Working with 3 universities and 3 Private educational institutes
  • Working with 3 best digital schools in state to increase readership and feedback process in Wikipedia

Target[edit]

  • 6 Workshops
  • 3 programs in digital schools

Wikisource[edit]

We have developed partnership with 8 libraries/archives and one librarians' association. To enhance the quality and authenticity of knowledge, original reference material should be available on Wikisource. It is very crucial for articles on socio-cultural, historical and political issues. Literature of writers and organisations which played pioneering role in weaving socio-cultural and political fabric of Modern India would be brought on Wikisource as valuable reference material. We have already facilitated in content donation from eminent scholars like Prof.Jayant Narlikar, Prof.Mangala Narlikar, Dr.Sharu Ranganekar & Dr. Irawati Karve.

Objectives[edit]

  • To create database of rare reference books and digitised books
