The Wikipedia Summit India 2013 will be two day summit organized by Wikipedia Club Pune to promote Wikipedia in education and to bridge gendergap.

What is Wikipedia Summit India 2013?[edit]

Wikipedia Summit India 2013 will be two day 'action' oriented Summit where 9+ University Directors and Deans will participate to Connect - Act - Inspire at luxurious Eco-friendly venue.

Along with University Directors, People with idea's and potential to run projects will be invited for Summit. 3 Separate Tracks will be there, where brainstorming will take place for action plan.

Summit will take place on 12th and 13th January 2013 (Saturday - Sunday) Action oriented plan will be launched at end of Summit, and 9 Universities will 'execute' and implement idea's in their respective field. Wikipedia Club India will act as catalyst in whole process.

Why Pune ?[edit]

Pune (Maharashtra, India) is known for ideas worth spreading - from swaraj, quit India, women’s emancipation, swadeshi, super-computing to cell sciences and molecular genetics. Pune has led India - and even the world - and been an ideas capital for centuries. Pune's thinkers and doers have inspired better citizenship and strived for better education opportunities. Pune is also known as Oxford of East with 2.5 Lac students in 9 universities.


Pune City: Pune is the seventh largest metropolis in India, the second largest in the state of Maharashtra after Mumbai and the largest city in the Western Ghats. Once the centre of power of the Maratha Empire, it is situated 560 metres above sea level on the Deccan plateau at the confluence of the Mula River (India) and Mutha river. Pune city is the administrative capital of Pune district.

Pune is known to have existed as a town since 847 AD. Pune was originally called Punawadi.In 1730, Pune became an important political center as the seat of the Maratha Peshwa, the prime minister of the Bhonsle Chhatrapati of Satara (ruler of the Maratha Empire); it was during this era that Pune became the centre of Indian politics.

After the town was annexed to British India in 1817, it served as a cantonment town and as the "monsoon capital" of the Bombay Presidency until the Independence of India.

Today, Pune is known for its educational facilities and relative prosperity. Pune is the cultural capital of Maharashtra. Pune has had manufacturing, glass, sugar, and forging industries since the 1950-60s. It has a growing industrial hinterland, with information technology and automotive companies setting up factories in the district. The city is known for cultural activities like classical music, spirituality, theatre, sports, and literature. These activities and job opportunities attract migrants and students from all over India and abroad, which makes for a city of many communities and cultures.

Pune is ranked as a Gamma- Global City.

Why Wikipedia Summit India ?[edit]

Wikipedia Summit India will strive to collect together contemporary ideas worth executing to inspire better educational through Wikipedia. It will seek out ideas that inspire people to live lives with purposes beyond oneself. It will seek to spread ideas that inspire better tomorrow.

As Women education concept was pioneered in India, also first women teacher was from Pune, first girls school was started in Pune, so continuing tradition - First larger scale efforts to bridge gender-gap will start from Wikipedia Summit India! Second day will be dedicated to address gender-gap issue with action oriented plans.

Summit[edit]

The Summit is to be for two days beginning at 0900 hrs on 12th January 2013 (Saturday) and concluding in the afternoon on 13th January 2013 (Sunday).
