Extend WikiCurricula, an interactive dashboard to visualize curriculum data
[edit]WikiCurricula is a curricula digitisation project aiming to align Wikimedia projects with school curricula with the help of Wikidata(you can read more on Wikidata for Education here). It is an interactive and engaging way to visualize curriculum-structured data on Wikidata. It shows metrics on Wikipedia articles that relate to a country's school curriculum. It consists of a static website that visually represents the data stored in a TSV file, plus a Python script that generates this TSV by calling different Wikimedia APIs.
What problems is WIkiCurricula trying to solve?
[edit]- Open Education and Access: WikiCurricula embraces that education should be for everyone, no matter where they live or how much money they have. It aims to make educational resources and curricula freely accessible to everyone. This openness supports learners who are motivated to learn on their own, and it enables educators to modify and enhance educational content.
- Inclusivity and Diversity : WikiCurricula has the potential to foster inclusivity and diversity in education by presenting a diverse array of topics and perspectives. Individuals from various backgrounds and cultures can engage with content that resonates with their unique experiences and interests.
- Empowerment and Societal Change : Making education available to all can empower individuals to enhance their lives and make positive contributions to their communities. The knowledge and skills gained from open educational resources can create a significant societal influence.
- Global Collaboration : Wikicurricula being Open Source brings people from around the world together to create and keep up educational content. This teamwork builds a sense of shared responsibility to advance knowledge.
New terms or concepts I have learned in the past month
[edit]- Wikidata Query Service (WDQS): a convenient way to query Wikidata for structured data.
- SPARQL: a language to formulate queries for knowledge databases
- i18n & l10n: Internalization and Localization respectively. Read more about these two terms here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internationalization_and_localization
Why would people want to use your project?
[edit]- Ease of Use : WIkiCUrricula aims to create an interactive and engaging user interface so that Wikimedia contributors, teachers, and the general public can visualize and explore the curriculum topics and structure
- Learning materials are freely available : WikiCurricula is accessible to all without fees or limitations, this transparency promotes independent learning and empowers educators to enhance and refine educational materials.
- Utilizing Wikidata and Wikipedia : WikiCurricula" harnesses the extensive educational data and content found on Wikidata and Wikipedia. These platforms, grounded in principles of collaboration and open knowledge sharing, serve as optimal sources for educational information.
What was confusing to me about the project?
[edit]Initially, during the contribution phase, I was confused about everything! However, through continuous involvement and help from the mentors, I gained a clearer understanding of the project, and now I confidently share my knowledge in this blog. For instance, I initially had no knowledge of Toolforge, let alone how to use it for deployment. Fortunately, resources like Wikipedia provided valuable information that aided me in learning about it.
How does WikiCurricula fit into the larger community?
[edit]WikiCurricula harnesses the extensive reservoir of educational data and content found on Wikidata and Wikipedia. It also contributes to making knowledge accessible to a global audience as Internalization and Location is a feature we're currently working on using Translate Wiki which strengthens the global impact and inclusiveness of the Wikimedia community. What makes you most excited to work on your project?
[edit]Seeing it EXTENDED! 🥳
I am enthusiastic about a key objective of this project – fostering 'Inclusivity and Diversity.' The prospect of extending the project to numerous countries' curricula excites me. Additionally, the incorporation of 'Internalization and Localization' for this software into various languages is a source of anticipation, as it was part of my proposal during the final application process. I anticipate the project's expansion to include my own country as well!
