The Translation Task Force arm of WikiProject Medicine is a collaborative effort begun in 2011 with the goal of improving healthcare's most important topics, followed by translation into as many other languages as possible (including simple English). The project is a collabortation between WikiProject Medicine, Wikimedia Project Med Foundation, and Translators Without Borders. Wiki Project Med Foundation and Translators Without Borders are both supporting organizations and connected through, Healthcare Information For All by 2015. A complete list of languages in which Wikipedia exists related to the number of speakers of said language can be found at stats Process[edit]We currently have 33 articles ready to be translated in both full and simplified versions. And we have an addition 45 simplified articles. If you are interested in translating an article please email Enrique Cavalitto enrique at proz dot com. If you are interested in improving articles prior to translation please contact Doc James or simply create a Wikipedia account and start editing. The process involves:
Bringing topics up to GA or FA status[edit]All full articles must reach WP:GA or WP:FA status before they are translated. To get the biggest benefit out of the efforts of those doing translation we need the starting text to be excellent. For advice on how to edit medical articles see WP:MEDHOW. And for specific requirements that help with translation see Writing For Translation. Creating simplified version[edit]Some smaller languages have little or no content. Often there is also a limited vocabulary for complicated medical terminology and the number of volunteer translators are few. Thus we have created a shortened simplified version of all the articles. These are typically 2-4 paragraphs in length and give just a brief overview of the condition in question. If you use Firefox, this Simple English dictionary will help you improve the simplified articles by marking any words that are not in the Simple English vocabulary as "misspelled". After you install the extra dictionary, right-click in an edit window and change the spell check dictionary (under "Languages") to "English". Translating the articles to as many other languages as possible[edit]The translation will take place from the full or simplified English edition of the articles.
Adding articles back into the appropriate language of Wikipedia[edit]Ideally this will be taken care of by local Wikipedians. In some languages it has been difficult to recruit and thus is being done by none native speakers. Instructions on how to add articles is here (including the user name and password to access the TWB website. To do[edit]
People involved[edit]If you are interested in this project please add yourself to the list of people involved along with your languages abilities. Reasons to become involved[edit]Wikipedia is the most used health care resource on the Internet both by unique visitors and by pageviews. For all those interested in global health this is an opportunity to help bring high quality healthcare information to the world. The effort is primarily concentrating on 80 top importance medical articles of global significance. Currently they are put together as a Wikipedia Book in English at Book:Health Care and in simple English at here. In the month of February 2012 these pages in English received a total of 10.6 million page views.[1] A more in depth breakdown can be found at popular pages of the translation taskforce Press[edit]Article in The Guardian (April 11, 2012)[edit]Translators fight the fatal effects of the language gap Volunteers translating health messages from English into local languages are providing a vital service for NGOs and freeing up millions of extra dollars to be used for medical aid ....TWB is working on an even more ambitious project with Wikipedia. The aim is to take Wikipedia entries on the most important health topics, turn them into simple English and then translate them into as many languages as possible. The articles will then be accessible for free on mobile phones through new agreements between Wikimedia, which runs Wikipedia, and telecoms operators. A number of Wikipedia articles covering dengue fever, Aids, malaria, cholera and tuberculosis are awaiting translation from TWB's army of volunteers."
