What problem does this solve?[edit]
Sometimes educators and volunteers encounter connectivity issues when using Wikimedia projects in the classroom that are different from other types of projects. You can anticipate and solve some of these problems in advance. For others, it is wise to be prepared with solutions so that volunteer and class time is not wasted.
What is the solution?[edit]
Slow or no internet connection.
- Read the learning pattern on connectivity issues for ways to deal with poor connectivity.
- If slow or no internet connection is problematic on a regular basis, consider asking for a grant or in-kind donation to purchase a wifi hotspot for in-class editing workshops.
Filters block access to Wikimedia pages.
- An educator should test connectivity to Wikimedia projects that will be used in class prior to student workshops. If access is blocked, the educator should work with their school to resolve issues with filters.
Unreliable electricity.
- Use printed materials.
- Practice learning objectives like writing in Neutral Point of View and writing without plagiarizing with worksheets, or on the blackboard.
- Have students work on research that can be done offline and write drafts of work that can later be put online.
