Can we hold on to this chance and potential?

Global & Regional Internal Partnerships[edit]

IDEA

Wikimedia Conference 2015 Group photo
  • What?: We need to take action to build global and regional internal partnerships!
  • Who?: We signifies active members of local, regional and global Wikimedia organizations, as well as communities, who can act as an agent or liaison. This means each and every person on Wikimedia Conference and beyond.
  • Why?: We are not using existing capacities sufficiently:
  1. There is a common background which helps to create synergy and multiply the effect of our efforts!
  2. Common understanding also makes it possible to allocate resources usually spent on explanatory work with external partners to actual work and doing things!
  3. It would be really nice to show all our possible external partners that we have a successful internal partnerships program, which makes us even more awesome and valuable!

Internal partnerships may just be the easiest ones out there!

  • When?: Time is now! We are together on the conference - the best place to make personal commitments, so we should make use of that! Let's make our dream of functional global cooperation work by keeping our commitments and following-up after the conference!

ACTIONS

So what can we do about it?

Europeana 280 visualisation
  • Replicate!: We can replicate already existing projects like CEE Spring or Europeana 280 in other communities and language projects. Scale it up and get people engaged! Imagine a Art history Challenge with nearly 200 artworks from nearly 200 countries being edited on 250 different language Wikipedias!
  • Impress!: We can impress our local external partners with the effectiveness of our global internal partnerships, making their content visible all over all continents within days!
  • Fill the gaps!: We can collaborate on topics that need more attention, whether it is human rights, Women in Red or Wiki Project Med. Together we can draw attention and save lives!
  • Translate!: There are already existing translators in communities. Let's support them in a sustainable manner and hook them with interesting challenges! There are also many possibilities created to different translation tools available. Let's actualize this potential!
  • Communicate!: We need to get better in communicating what is going on and make it easier for affiliates to become internal partners on various programs! We have to know what is going on so we can join in and make local ripples globally notable tidal waves, which will overwhelm, awe and inspire people! Or we can make a global program/event calendar at least, like we have in CEE ...

Yes, we can!

MOVING FORWARD

Global collaboration meeting on WMCON16

So what's next?

  • There was a meeting held on the 21st of April in the Office of Wikimedia Deutschland as part of Wikimedia Conference 2016 (you can find notes taken on etherpad) and there seems to be reason to continue!
  • How will we keep this initiative alive?
  • How will we grow it and reach out to wider audience of active community members?
  • Should we meet up again to have some more face-to-face discussion in a physical place?
  • Who are ready to take commitments related to creation and coordination of global and regional internal partnerships?

Let's continue our discussion!
