A map overlay rendering extension is more complicated and not as necessary as its counterparts. This is an easy way to get some great functionality. A map can be provided by any image and the wiki can add the rest.

Here is a mockup of what its output could look like:

This extension is not a search engine. It is a display mechanism for overlaying geocoordinates onto images. And providing a key with links. (It is a good first step in creating a graphical geosearch special page.) This function is already being done well manually by many editors (see The National Mall). This extension would automate that task, standardizing that aspect of the maps and make them editable.
