This page exposes reflections inspired by the reading of the section about initialism variants of umbrella terms for marginalized sexualities and gender identities on Wikipedia. Capturing all these human diversities in a single term is assuredly a tough challenge, and the following consideration is all about meditating it.

State of the art[edit]

A Pride flag that uses the original "Retro 8" design with the updated trans/BIPOC chevron similar to the Progress Pride Flag designed by Daniel Quasar. In addition, the flag incorporates symbols for intersex and autism awareness. The name and design are intended to represent intersectionality and and the infinite diversity of human identity.
Attention to widening explicit inclusion of many concerns is also fostering diversity in other creative symbols such as flags. It's all the more important to recall here that the topic treated on this page is a very narrow overture of the cultural heritage that marginalized people are offering to humanity.

The title of the just mentioned Wikipedia article is LGBT, at least at time of developing this reflection. It also mentions many other initialisms in use, which in numerico-alphabetical order include 2SLGBTQ+, 2SLGBTQQIA+, GLBT, GLBTQ, GSD, GSM, GSRM, LGB, LGBT2Q+, LGBTI, LGBTIH, LGBTIQ, LGBTIQA+, LGBTQ+, LGBTQ, LGBTQ2, LGBTQIA+, LGBTQIA, LGBTQQ, LGBTTIQQ2SA, MOGAI, MOGII, MSGI, QUILTBAG and SGM.

The Wikipedia article also presents queer as the single non-initialism based term that already gained significant traction, though it also comes with its detractors in the concerned community due to its historical usage as a slur.

Specifying compelling traits of fine terms[edit]

NAIVE presented as an acronym standing for Nonsensical, Ambiguous, Immeasurable, Vast, and Extraneous.
Before diving into some enquiry, it might be worth considering if the endorsed approach is not too naive.

As stated in the article itself "longer initialisms have been criticized as confusing or unwieldy, sometimes being referred to as "alphabet soup", and mocked with labels such as LGBTQWERTY, LGBTQXYZ, and alphabet mafia."

Ideally, an alternative proposition should be free of these inconveniences. That is, it should stay as short as possible, convey a clear meaning, and be engaging through consuetude/custom/familiarity for example letting speakers connect the term to well known prefixes, suffixes, roots and other morphemes.

Among the above-mentioned 26 initialisms, only QUILTBAG is announced to deliberately form an acronym, in the sense of a word that can be pronounced as a glided flow rather than as a discontinue sequence of spelled out letters. This is a graceful trait that certainly should be kept as a criteria to ease oral conversations on the topic.

Incidentally MOGAI[1] and MOGII might be regarded as qualifiable alternatives on that phonetic consideration. Although the -ai and -ii terminations are not extremely frequent in English words, they can be found for the former in words such as Thai and samurai, and for the latter in Hawaii and genii.

QUILTBAG has been used since at least 2010 but remains largely less used than other options such as LGBT.[2][3] From a quick statistical overview it comes just above MSGI and MOGAI, being just under LGBTQ2, after which significant gaps appear in increasing frequency between LGBTQQ, GLBTQ, the closer LGBTQIA & LGBTIQ, then LGBTI which all remain dwarfed by LGBT.[4][5] Even terms that are measurably harder to pronounce, like LGBTQIA+, seem to have gained more traction. Lexical inertia[6] alone could be presented a sufficient factor to explain this observation. However the feeling that it could have some derogatory connotation should also taken into account.[7] Indeed lexical proximity with beanbag, douchebag or scumbag is certainly easy to spot for any English speaker, if not mentally inevitable at least at some unconscious level.

These observations lead to the conclusion that to be successful, an LGBT plesionym will have a safer bet if it expands the term LGBT itself and rather in the very same sequence order. That forms certainly the most constraining trait that this analysis section is devising as advisable.

A far less constraining outcome of the previously exposed investigation is to recommend avoiding any derogatory paronymy. That might seem like an obvious prescription from some perspective, however the precedent of stigma reversion[8][9][10][11][12][13][14] on queer might induce a surge to more attempts of linguistic reappropriation. However, as already noted the term queer itself doesn't entice full unanimity in the concerned community. While any attempt to drop a term as widely adopted will legitimately rise critics of queer erasure.

Also QUILTBAG might be given as standing for multiple terms for each of its initials: Queer/Questioning, Undecided/Undetermined/Unlabelled/Unidentified/Unisex/Unsure, Indigender/Intersex, Lesbian, Trans/Transgender/Transsexual/Two-Spirit, Bisexual, Agender/Allied/Aromantic/Asexual, Gay/Gender-non-conforming/Genderqueer while it's QUILTBANG derivative add a N standing for Non-binary.[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22][23][24][25][26] Knowing that non-binary at least for some people can mean either someone in between the two genders which are male and female, agender, genderless, nongendered, genderfree or people who are neither man/woman, outside of the binary spectrum, that covers already a lot of cases in only 9 letters.[27] So the main lessons from this quick review are that:

  1. not everyone is binding the exact same terms to each initial, there is room to fit each specific needs backed by common means;
  2. even in a given context, it's customary to bind several terms sharing their initial into the same letter of an initialism, though as anything this doesn’t meet absolute unanimity.[28]

Consideration on building pangrammic words[edit]

While for the purpose of this reflection it's not necessary to fully solve a full alphabet single word acronym puzzle, it might be fun and interesting to skim the topic. Indeed, if a single letter can cover several word, it can be legitimately stated that a single-word pangram would the hardest requirement to cover all possible words under an initialism acronym.

Once again, even taking into account all specific cases that could either emerge in the context of marginalized sexualities and gender identities, there is no a priori certainty that all letters of alphabets would be required. So the rest of this section is only very loosely related to the main topic and it can be squeezed by uninterested readers.

So, in English a pangram acronym basically means a word with 26 letters. As it turns out, words like counterrevolutionaries and electroencephalographs with their 22 letters are not that uncommon. And with an all-purpose prefixe like anti- it's easy to make anticounterrevolutionaries and antielectroencephalographs and to obtain words with 26 letters. All the more these words stay quite straight forward to understand for any English speaker. All that to say that English do allow very long words that are undecipherable by its speakers. The only remaining difficulty would then to build a perfect pangrammic word whose morphes can match a relevant meaning for the aimed context.

Some langues provides complete words and sentences using only consonants, like the famous Strč prst skrz krk in Czech and Slovak. So in the absolute, building syllables without vowels is something possible. However in English, apart for some onomatopoeiae and derived words, like tsk and to tsk, a syllable is expected to include a vowel as a nucleus. However some slang words are meant to code at least one untranscribed vowel, such as pwn which should be pronounced /pɔːn/, /piˈəʊn/ or /piˈɔːn/. But let's stash these exceptions for now. As Latin alphabet comes with only 5 vowels coding letters against the 21 remaining. Which implies that to form a valid perfect pangram, each vowel should be accompanied with 4.2 consonants in average. Clustering consonant letters in a single English vowel quickly reach limits, all the more with the added constraint of not having duplicated consonant appearing along the word. That said spring has 5 distinct consonant letters, scratch has 6 unique ones, and schmaltz has 7 different ones.

Let's build an example departing from schmaltz. Removing those using the vowel a, English has at least 15 remaining words with the form CCVCC with only distinct consonants: bring, brink, brown, drink, drown, drunk, fjord, frond, frown, grind, grown, prong, wring, wrong, wrung. From there it's possible to imagine a word such as grownschmaltz. Indeed although it is not strictly agglutinative, English tends to accept word concatenation rather liberally. Already the remaining lexical options are greatly shrinking, and the only words remaining have at most only two distinct consonants including bed, bib, bid, bud, deb, dip, dub, fed, fib, fix, jib, kid, pyx, vex. Going ahead with bud and fix to build grownschmaltzbudfix to which an adjectival suffix -y and a e-, standing for in an electronic form, could be added to form e-grownschmaltzbudfixy. So that still leaves 5 missing letters, j, k, p, q, v, but that's already covering 80% of the Latin alphabet. It illustrates perfectly both what methods can be used to move along, and how difficult it can be to reach a complete solution nonetheless.

If the quest is relaxed to a pangram which is not perfect, and without length constraint, it’s easy to juxtapose a series of prefixes and suffixes around a root and construct a word in a xenoinfrageojuridicokyriomnipostultraequioverschizo-antidisestablishmentarianistical-way.

To get a better idea of what identity are more or less frequently given more visibility in initialisms, this section propose to expose those which were find after a brief investigation, along known initialisms that render them ostensibly.

This section thus doesn’t cover all terms found in the explored corpus, only those terms for which some initialisms where found, which of course can miss some that are indeed used in practice. That is, while this table provides an extensive set of entries, there is no pretension here that the list is exhaustive.[29][30][31][32][33][34][35] Also note that presence in this table doesn’t imply that the term necessarily gained consensual acceptance in the broader community, that is beyond their very own proposers.

Initials followed with a question mark provides quick highlight of the lake of success in finding a matching attestation. While it doesn’t suggest that there is anything wrong with moving forward and employ them, but it’s always nicer to be aware that this is a step into the uncharted.[36][37][38][39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46]

From there it can be observed that, keeping only mono-letters initialisms for which attestation where found, to cover them all at most 22 letters be required: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W; the 4 undues being J, X, Y, Z.

Exploring LGBT lexical vicinity[edit]

As stated in a prior section, to reach an acronym that has better chances to catch any adoption in marginalized sexualities and gender identities spheres, it should rather keep L, G, B, T in it and preferably in that order.

Perfect homophones[edit]

As the main motivation to do so is the often reported issue of oral use for longer terms such as LGBTQUIA+, let's first focus on how LGBT is pronounced itself: /ɛl d͡ʒiː biː tiː/. That makes four vowels already present in the initialism which are not part of its transcription.

English usually doesn't use strict phonetic rendering of its vocabulary, so a word pronounced like /ɛld͡ʒiːbiːtiː/ could be transcribed in many ways. Indeed /iː/ can be transcribed at least in 6 manners as shown in be (biː), bee (/biː/), key (/kiː/), sea (/siː/), ski (/skiː/), while /ɛ/ appears in at least 5 rendering exemplified in air (/ɛr/), any (/ˈɛni/), bed (/bɛd/), head (/hɛd/), said (/sɛd/). As for /d͡ʒiː/ it is present in genius ( /ˈd͡ʒin.jəs/ or /ˈd͡ʒi.ni.əs/) and congeal (/kənˈd͡ʒiːl/). It is also close to what is pronounced for gym (/d͡ʒɪm/) and fidget (/ˈfɪd͡ʒɪt/) as well as "jeep" (/d͡ʒiːp/) which is less interesting in the current context as it doesn't start with a g.

One possibility to transcribe /ɛl d͡ʒiː biː tiː/ is thus elgeabity, with el- as in elf, -gea- as in hydrangea, -bi- as in bistro[N 2], -ty as in beauty. And thus ELGEABITY stays fully homophone while it expands the acronym to 5 letters and so offer more room to ostensibly signify other terms.

A silent H could easily be added after the first e, like in eh; or Nehru, or before it, like in herb (pronounced /(h)ɝb/ though); or even on both side; so leading to EHLGEABITY, HELGEABITY or HEHLGEABITY, respectively. Incidentally, introducing an initial H should be considered with caution. The closeness of HELLGEABITY should indeed be taken into consideration, as it would introduce a derogatory connotation, comparison with hellhole for example will light the subject. This can be tempered by addition of an other vowel after L, but then the homophony with LGBT would no longer be assured, as will expose a comparison with hellebore (/ˈhɛlɪbɔːɹ/). Exploring such a trail will be worth a dedicated section.

Lax homeosequences[edit]

So if adding letters that will lead astray from the pronunciation of LGBT is considered, it can be combined with the goal of introducing the additional letters missing so far in ELGEABITY and present in other variants of LGBT. Also as much as possible trying to avoid to introduce more syllables looks preferable to keep the variants practical in oral exchanges: four full syllables is already quite high for a word in English. The 26 initialisms presented in the state of the art are using all together 16 signs: +, 2, A, B, D, G, H, I, L, M, O, Q, R, S, T, U, so 14 letters of which ELGEABITY is only missing D, H, M, O, Q, R, S, U and bringing an additional Y which can thus be stashed for now if needed.

Let's consider Schmidt, a slang term meaning someone who should never be underestimated, .[122] Turning it into a suffix is enough to shrink the remaining missing initials to O, Q, R and U. It even covers an additional C, which can indeed be useful for the present context. All the more a form like (LGB)TSCHMIDT encompasses the sequence TS that can then stand for two-spirit/twin-spirit. This turns into an undue point the topic of incorporating or not 2 as some other initialisms do. The remaining initials can be treated with an other suffix such as -(o)resque, that takes inspiration from picturesque, to compare with its Italian source pittoresco and its French cousin pittoresque. The o here is deemed optional, as schmidtresque is just as fine to pronounce as schmidtoresque, and the diachronic ventures of this etymon already shown how legit it is to modulate its presence. On an initialism perspective, it can for example stand for Others, which can then replace any need of a + sign. And to complete this approach, LGBT must be vowel-expanded in a way that minimizes its syllable count. Taking BT, beat is a pretty obvious option, and beat of the heart is certainly one of the strongest allegory it connotes: how vividly cool! On LG side, lung would be a nice possibility, but this would break the aim exposed earlier to not introduce non-vowels letters inside the LGBT sequence. An other option is liege, that is a free and independent person. Actually, it can specifically refer to a lord paramount; a sovereign, and in full liege lord, to a king or lord, though it also has an enantiosemic meaning of being subject of a sovereign or lord; a liegeman. So, leaving these semantic subtleties out, with this approach:

  • LIEGEBEAT can now be used as a variant of LGBT, while alluding to the pulse of the free and independent people;
  • LIEGEBEATSCHMIDT extend a first time the list of people ostensibly referred to, and for sure no-one should dare to underestimate people crafting the palpitation of those who have liberty flooding in their veins;
  • LIEGEBEATSCHMIDT(O)RESQUE further expand it thanks to the suffix that expresses the quality of the root, which level up beyond a craft to the realm of existential art.

These options obviously are scripturally far longer than other usual initialisms. Even LGBTTIQQ2SA and 2SLGBTQQIA+ with their 11 signs seem very shy little lexies compared to LIEGEBEATSCHMIDTORESQUE and its 23 letters: more than twice the length of the longest most common variants! However the focus here was on handy terms for spoken exchanges, and on that side LIEGE-BEAT is two syllables, which is half what LGBT requires. Even LIEGEBEATSCHMIDT is one syllable less than LGBT, and only with LIEGEBEATSCHMIDTRESQUE the expansion meets LGBT on its syllable length. Even with LIEGEBEATSCHMIDTORESQUE and its five syllables, it is actually on par with LGBT+ on that point.

Other variations are possible depending of what is deemed fine to let without ostentation, including LEAGEBEATISM, LEAGEBEATRHYTME, LIEGEBEATORESQUE, LIEGEBEATRIQUE, LIEGEBEATSEOUS, as well as LIEGEBEATOS where OS might for example stands for other singularities on top of other terms expandable from the initial S. Or LIEGEBEATO as an alternative to LGBT+, with O standing simply for and Others. That can be compared with other English terms finishing in -o such as adagio, aficionado, barrio, basso, bimbo, commando, dado, desperado, ego, falsetto, generalissimo, hero, impresario, jumbo, kiddo, maestro, nuncio, pro, soprano, tyro, virtuoso and wacko, to name a few.

Topic explicitation[edit]

So far the proposals where mainly driven by letters present in prior initialisms. Stashing this goal, an other approach could be to rather add morphes that are relevant to the topic at hand, starting with sexual and gender diversities. In this perspective LIEGEBEATSEXGENDER or LIEGEBEATSEXGENDERO are straight forward. And a close syllabically shorter option is LIEGEBEATSEXGENR (/liːd͡ʒ.biːt.sɛks.ˈ(d)ʒɒnɹ/), if concision is deemed more decisive.

Or departing with the broader notions of orientation, identity and expression,[123] or some synonyms like exposure,[124] -way, -wise and voice.[125] Thus LIEGEBEATWAY, LIEGEBEATWISE, LIEGEBEATVOICE or the tremendous LIEGEBEATEXPOSURE.

From which qualia emerge cuteness?

Previous approaches introduced gradually more considerations for morphes meaningfulness, departing from LGBT as base to widen. Instead this section explore how a meaningful term might be bolster to integrate the LGBT sequence.

As a base, let's consider qualia, which in philosophy of mind are defined as instances of subjective, conscious experience. Since contains a l as single console of its last syllable, it make a perfect departure anchor to sail toward an *l*g*b*t* sequence.

One way to handle it would be to cover all the remaining initials using a single word, such as gadabout. Other options if additional intermediary consonants are considered would include gambit, legibility, eligibility, gubernatorial, impregnability, intelligibility, manageability, navigability, tangibility, tugboat. Unfortunately None of them seem to make a strong match with full list of aimed requirements. For example tugboat seems rather irrelevant for the topic; gadabout can be attached the connotation of frivolity which might feel derogatory; gambit might connote witness, but also deceitfulness. Other mentioned terms are rather long, even in some case an apocope of qualia is practicable, such as qualimpregnability.

An other way to include more initials is to go on a more step by step approach, looking for relevant words or affixes.

One possibility to include g is the suffix -age which can carry the sense of collection or appurtenance; a process, action, or a result; a state or relationship. That leads to qualiage. Also compare to the French alliage which can mean alloy, alloying, close union, fusion, marriage, mixture.

For the next step trying to include both remaining base initials would be possible with about, just like in gadabout, so qualiageabout. Or bringing back beat, so qualiagebeat. Or dropping the lake of intermediary consonant, using some word among ablest, abreast, ambient, bast, befit, beset, blest, bowsprit, bouquet, bravest, breast, breath, broadest, burst, debut, embodiment, flamboyant, inhabit, noblest, robust, rubiest, subject, sublimest, thunderbolt, urbanest, vibrant.

So for example qualigeablest, which can actually be both interpreted as qualige-ablest and qualigea-blest, so something like blessed most able qualia. The same remark will apply to qualigeabreast, with breast holding the the figurative meaning of seat of the emotions, feelings, one's heart or innermost thoughts, and abreast encompassing meanings as various as side by side and facing forward, informed, well-informed, familiar, acquainted, equally advanced, at the same time simultaneously.

An other approach would be to go with a portmanteau word, such as qualiageabeture or qualiageabuture, intermixing qualia, liage, abet or abut and -ure which and also recall villegiatura. It also matches the prototypical LGBT sequence in order with only vowels inserted in-between, somehow fitting the consonantal root QLGBTR. Here qua can also recall the English words which can mean acting as, in the capacity of or by virtue of. Or relaxing the constraints on consonant insertions, go with qualiageambiture, using ambit or qualiagexhibit using exhibit.

Let’s pick qualigeablest and see how it can be be extended further to encompass more initials. Apart from +, that would be trivial to incorporate as in qualigeablest+, it already has all signs also present in LGBTQIA+. The next meetable challenge is to have all initials presents in LGBTIQCAPGNGFNBA for which it’s missing C, N, F and P, which can be covered with combination of two usual prefixes such as pan-facio- meaning all faces. Thus panfacioqualigeablest is something like the featureful blessed most able qualia.

An other letter set to consider is A, B, D, G, H, I, L, M, O, Q, R, S, T, U, that is enough to cover all those in initialisms used in the Wikipedia article. For covering them all qualigeablest is missing D, H, M, O, R, which can be encompassed with two prefixes like dia-morph- meaning across the forms. Thus diamorphiqualigeablest will mean embodiment-throughout blessed most able qualia and panfaciodiamorphiqualigeablest could be interpreted as featureful formful blessed most able qualia.

To cover all the other initials that were considered so far, that is A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, there are a few ones that were not yet considered in previous expansions, namely K, V, and W which can be covered with two affixes like wave-like-. As a standalone term wavelike is actually used in physics for something having properties or characteristics of a wave and recall the wave–particle duality. Also to wave can mean to fluctuate; to waver; to be in an unsettled state. So wavelikequaligeablest can mean something like fluctuantesque blessed most able qualia and wavelikepanfaciodiamorphiqualigeablest something like fluctuantesque featureful formful blessed most able qualia.

Finally, to cover the whole alphabet, the only intial that were not yet considered are J, X, Y, and Z, which can be covered with two affixes like zygo-juxta- which can stand for something like union alongside. So zygojuxtaqualigeablest can mean something like union side by side of blessed most able qualia and zygojuxtawavelikepanfaciodiamorphiqualigeablest something like conjunctural fluctuantesque featureful formful blessed most able qualia.

While English doesn’t encompass any single prefix or relevant prefix duo including the sequence TS, it does appear in regular words such as nutshell, outsay, outsee, outshine, oustand and outsum. Thus outshinequaligeablest can mean blessed most able qualia which shine brighter, and outshinezygojuxtawavelikepanfaciodiamorphiqualigeablestos can be interpreted as people characterized by transcending conjunctural fluctuantesque featureful formful blessed most able qualia.

Lexical comparisons[edit]

This journey started by summarizing a list a 26 initialisms, and along the way presented a few others, including a bit of bright new ones. The goal of the latter was to keep LGBT in its original sequence while expanding it. It’s now time to consider how these terms fits when analyzed through some objectively measurable characteristics, such as scriptural length, number of syllables, oral fluentness, meaningfulness of their morphes, number of latin letter covered and ratio compared to all those used in other initialisms.

To allow a smoother analysis on ratio side, some choices are taken as exposed hereafter.

Of course given the departure point, a ratio of covering LGBT itself does make sense, even even some initialisms legitimately don’t cover any of them like SAGA.

An other baseline considered, labelled Trite, is the 14 letters taken out of the 26 initialisms found within the LGBT article of Wikipedia: A, B, D, G, H, I, L, M, O, Q, R, S, T, U. Note that it does not keep the + sign, nor the 2 used for two spirit. Instead two dedicated columns are accounting for the presence of their matching concept, namely overt and phenobispiritual respectively. The latter is also especially useful as 2S and TS are the only digrams used in this set of initialisms.

The last point critically matters because the analyze simplify a bit the information at hand. It takes the party of pretending ignorance about what the letters are actually bound to in each initialism. Said otherwise, it takes a very generous and liberal approach on what each letter should represent. There is no claim here to reconsider what LGBT stands for of course: it unanimously and unquestionably stands for "lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender." So it all the more important to keep in mind that the retained flattened model on its side only considers whether the initialism contains a letter like T or not, regardless of it’s bound to transgender or two-spirit.

That’s especially useful to use for ratio computation, allowing to have a number summarizing how much of each set an initialism cover. Additionally the table will provide the number of extra letters compared to those presents in each considered set, also counting each duplicate as an supplemental extra. That is, thus counted even WSW has an extra letter compared to the whole alphabet.

With all that in mind, the next letter set considered is LGBTQIA+, as it represents the term that has the currently most growing usage with the biggest extension. Then LGBTIQCAPGNGFNBA is considered, as it is the longest term that was found in genuine non-ironic use. The next set considered is labelled Extended and includes the 22 letters A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, K, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R, S, T, U, V, W; which is enough to cover all initialisms presented in Wandering a rainbow lingo limbo. Finally the last set considered is the whole 26 letters of the classical Latin alphabet, that is labelled as Panalphabetic.

Encompassing the matrix[edit]

Of course, at the end of the day, each individual should choose in their own uses any term that feels subjectively the most appealing, or which feels like the best match for some specific context. In the pure spirit of love for diversity and inclusiveness, keeping multifariousness thrive should always be praised. 💓

  1. Dysgenesis however uses the prefix dys- which connotes an abnormality. Thus it implies that any swerve from some median spontaneous biological development should be deemed as an anomaly of some expected ontological prescription, or at the very least is not free of inducting such a suggestion as salient valid interpretation. That is probably something not very aligned with the spirit of a community which welcome diversity. A friendlier alternative could be spaniogenesis, derived from the ancient Greek σπάνιος/ spanios: rare or sparse, as in spaniolite, Spanioplanus or spaniomenorrhea.
  2. While the letter B is indeed pronounced /biː/, the sequence "bi" retained to transcribe the sound /biː/ is rare in English words. Other graphemes such as those used in "bee" or "be" are more frequent. The use of i here is motivated by diversification of introduced letters, as e and a where already used earlier. Depending on speakers all options among /ˈbiːstɹəʊ/, /ˈbɪstɹəʊ/, /ˈbiːstɹoʊ/ and /ˈbɪstɹoʊ/ are employed pronunciation. Variants using /iː/ are most likely influenced by French to which English loaned the word.
