Personal appeal from a new father.png

short[edit]

I started contributing to Wikipedia because it was fun. Because I was passionate about a few subjects and I wanted to share what I knew. But that's not why I stuck around.

I stuck around because of the mission: "Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment."

My son is a year old now. And that's the world I want him to grow up in. We have a long way to go before the sum of all knowledge is free for everyone to share. Please donate - keep Wikipedia free and help it grow.

I started contributing to Wikipedia because it was fun. Because I was passionate about a few subjects—obsolete scientific theories and the history of biology—and I wanted to share what I knew. But that's not why I stuck around.

I stuck around because of the mission: "Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment."

When my son was born, my greatest joy was to see him taking everything in. We are all born with a passion for knowledge, but to see that passion in such pure and concentrated form reminded me why Wikipedia matters. Wikipedia feeds that passion, keeping it alive in the young, rekindling it in the old. Wikipedia means a lot to the 400 million people who read it each month. But it will mean a lot more to the world when all six (almost seven) billion of us have that that same chance.

Really imagine what that world would be like. A world where people are passionate about getting the facts straight, about learning from other cultures and other viewpoints, about valuing others and their knowledge. A world where everyone who wants knowledge can have it. A world where sharing what you know is just what people do. Think about how different the world would be.

My son is a year old now. And that's the world I want him to grow up in. We have a long way to go before the sum of all knowledge is free for everyone to share. Please donate - keep Wikipedia free and help it grow.
