Program I: Content Enrichment[edit]

Thematic workshops[edit]

What
Knowledge creation workshops will be conducted - under Project Jalbodh for water related issues, Biodiversity and Women's issues with communities of interest in these three areas. Subject experts as well as new editors will be trained in Wikipedia editing and Wikimedia Commons uploading. These workshops will be organised in partnership with thematic organisations and educational institutes.

Why
As the three areas are closely associated with the society, people need reliable quality content about various aspects related to them. There is paucity of locally relevant knowledge on these sectors on internet. Hence there is opportunity to connect local knowledge repositories with Wikimedia projects.

How
The thematic organisations and communities of interest will be identified from at least three language regions. The knowledge gaps in Wikimedia projects would be focused during these workshops. The active citizens and students' will be mentored by subject experts and experienced activists at the grassroots in creating quality content. The content on Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons will be enriched through these workshops. The followup programmes will be planned for nurturing and sustaining the editors.

Outcome
The knowledge resources around two broader areas viz. Resources for Sustainable livelihoods and Women, would be developed. This will be achieved through -

  • Number of workshops - 6
  • Organisations - 6
  • Participants - 100
  • Newly registered - 60
  • Active editors - 12
  • Footprints - 6
  • New Articles - 30; Improved articles - 30
  • Images uploaded on Commons - 150

Content donation from authors/copyright holders[edit]

What
The database of notable authors and their heirs holding the copyrights will be developed. The selection of literature and priority will be decided through the community consultation. The events for content donation will be conducted on specific occasions to promote the concept in various regions of the state. The appropriate movement resources will be created for this drive.

Why
There is abundant content in the form of books, training material, manuals etc. which is not being reprinted. The valuable reference material is not available offline as well as online. Lot of content is therefore missing, forgotten or inaccessible for the society. As the future generations will be accessing the knowledge online, CIS-A2K is taking content donation drives and digitisation processes to make this content available online.

How
In the last two years, CIS-A2K approached authors and copyright holders in Maharashtra state for re-licensing of reference value content. As a result of consistent follow-up, total 130 Marathi books were released in CC-BY-SA. The stepwise manual for OTRS process was developed. As the procedure is well defined, the Marathi community members have also taken initiative. The activity is gaining momentum in the state. This year, the promotional resource material will be developed to expand the activity across the state. The community members will be supported for organising these satellite events. The authors who already donated the content, would be involved as role models. The resource material will be developed in three other languages also. The process will be replicated in at least three other states.

Outcome
The deliverables from the activities would be -

  • Maharashtra - 100 books
  • West Bengal - 50 books
  • Other states - 50 books

The involvement of the community in the activity would be -

  • Participants - 100
  • Newly registered - 20
  • Active editors - 10
  • Footprints - 8

GLAM projects[edit]

Creating Archives[edit]

What
The process of developing free digital archive has been started with Shetkari Sanghatana Trust in the last year will be continued. The similar projects will be executed with following organisations -

Why
Various organisations are working with dedication to create knowledge for more than three decades. Such knowledge repositories should be made digitally accessible in this era. There is also a need to integrate their databases, catalogs, audio & video files, books etc. with existing content on Wikimedia projects.

How
It is found that the organisations have done some previous efforts towards archiving the knowledge. The understanding of their work, the content in various forms and difficulties faced will be done in initial visits. The content will be categorized and sorted according to appropriate Wikimedia projects. The partners for digitization and further processing will be identified and trained. The content thus created will be promoted through relevant websites in academics, research and social sector.

Outcome
The four archives will contain knowledge in the form of texts, images, audio files of speeches and music, videos, databases, manuscripts etc.

Tentative targets are –

  • Books – 50
  • Images – 200
  • Audio files – 200
  • Videos – 50

Involvement of community –

  • Participants – 60
  • Newly registered – 40
  • Active editors - 8
  • Footprints - 4

Digitisation with libraries[edit]

What
The digitization drive would be taken to bring copyright free reference material in Wikimedia projects. The activity will be conducted with four libraries in two states.

Why
The copyright free books are more than 60 years old and getting damaged day by day. There are very few copies left of these rare books in some libraries. The authorities here are also facing problems in conservation of this treasure. Hence there is an urgent need to digitize this treasure and make it accessible in searchable form.

How
CIS-A2K facilitated the digitisation and uploading of 25 rare books published before year 1900 from Public Library, Rajgurunagar in Maharashtra. The process was completed at Vigyan Ashram, Pabal. CIS-A2K will work with 4 more libraries to prepare the list of copyright free books from various authors and sorting them according to priority of digitisation. The methodology for updating the database of authors' birth and death details will be introduced with the language communities on Wikisource and Wikidata projects.

Outcome

  • Two libraries each in Maharashtra & other state (200 books scanned & uploaded)

Involvement of community –

  • Participants – 40
  • Newly registered – 8
  • Active editors - 4
  • Footprints - 4

Program II: Skill-development[edit]

What
To improve the quality of work, the capacity building sessions will be designed for active Wikimedians on the following topics. Specific Community Movement Resources (CMRs) will be created on these topics. The sessions will be conducted online as well as offline.

  • Re-licensing of works
  • Copyrights
  • Importing databases, catalogs in Wikidata
  • Wiki pillars policies
  • Good article process

Why
During the revolving cafe sessions in training programmes, the Wikimedians have shown their interest acquiring more knowledge & skills in above mentioned topics. These inputs are necessary to expand the area of work and diversity of skills within the communities.

How
The analysis of interests expressed in needs assessment forms, training programme applications, request pages and requirements posted in Wikimedia projects of languages will be done to prepare the list of participants. The schedule of sessions will finalised in first quarter as per the mutual convenience. The expert trainers will be selected from community and CIS-A2K team. The sessions will be one-to-one or in a small group of 2-3 persons. The nature will be offline or online as per the situation.

Outcome
At least 2 persons from 5 language communities will be involved in these sessions. There will be two sessions for each person, initial and followup one. In all 20 sessions will be conducted.

Involvement of community –

  • Participants – 10
  • Newly registered – 0
  • Active editors - 10
  • Footprints - 5

GLAM mapping Research[edit]

What

This project will map 15 major GLAM institutions from Maharashtra & two other states, and review their collections, challenges and limitations with the aim of exploring possibilities for better collaboration between cultural & public memory institutions and GLAM-Wiki initiatives.

Why

After completing the pilot project for GLAM mapping in Pune district, the methodology to work with Institutions and Wikimedians was evolved. It was realised that in spite of having eagerness to open up their collections to a wider public, there are anxieties related to copyrights, access, linguistic barriers and government funding policies. Some institutions have gone further to start collaboration process. CIS-A2K therefore plans a more focused research of major institutions to come up with national level recommendations and guidelines for collaborations.

Outcome

Case studies of two institutions and recommendations towards potential GLAM-Wiki collaborations, especially with sister projects such as Wikimedia Commons, Wikisource and Wikidata.
