Proposed participation[edit]
The Wikimaps project aims to bring maps from archives around the world into Wikimedia Commons, and explore the past with their help. The Wikimaps project makes available tools to connect historical maps, images, documents and data together, to research and reinterpret the past in the light of the documents.
As an employee of Wikimedia Finland, and receiving funding for the Wikimaps project from the Wikimedia Foundation, this trip is not included in either the chapter budget nor the Wikimaps project budget. A transfer that was made to cover travel, has been allocated to other uses.
Goal and expected impact[edit]
The main reason to attend this event is to strengthen the ties between the Wikimaps and the OpenHistoricalMap projects. As the event takes place in a location, that has had less exposure to the Wikimaps project, I want to take advantage of the opportunity to explore the project with local mappers and wikimedians. The plan is to arrange a workshop for historical mapping, using maps and materials that have been collected in advance with local wikipedians. The workshop will guide the participants through the process and lead us to discuss together the possible local applications, and observations for further development.
