Simple English Wiktionary suffers from the fact it has no definitive mission that cannot be covered by the other standard dictionaries. Simple English Wiktionary seeks primarily to appeal to two simultaneous audiences:

  1. Learners of English who are considered "young", perhaps below the age of 18.
  2. English as a Second Language learners

The problem with appealing to the first category of learners is that they generally should not have internet access up to a certain age as the Wikimedia Foundation servers often serve content that are not always censored, and finding an obscure site like Simple English Wiktionary to teach proper English to one's child is difficult and rare to do. There's nothing that cannot be done here that is not replicated at the standard English Wiktionary or in other 'censored' online dictionaries and other paperback dictionaries, a sentiment which was expressed in the first of several proposals to close down the project.

The problem with appealing to the second category of learners is because of the increasing number of pages of translation entries per language edition Wiktionary, such as the French Wiktionary's coverage of English antidisestablishmentarianism that already serve this purpose to the audience of its language. Therefore, Simple English Wiktionary has duplicated the work of both English Wiktionary for purpose 1 and duplicated the work of several other language Wiktionary editions in translation efforts for purpose 2.
