En els propers dies, segurament durant la setmana del 25 al 29 de març de 2019, el Parlament Europeu votarà sobre la nova directiva de Drets d'Autor en el Mercat Únic que, en cas d'aprovar-se, pot posar en greu risc Internet tal com la coneixem avui en dia.

En lloc de promoure una actualització de les lleis tot permetent un increment de la participació ciutadana en la societat de la informació, la nova directiva representa una amenaça a la llibertat d'expressió i crea obstacles per accedir a la xarxa tot afegint-hi noves barreres, filtres i restriccions, abastables només per uns pocs proveïdors tecnològics arreu del món, els quals paradoxalment no són europeus.

El juliol del 2018, tant des de la Viquipèdia en català com des d'altres versions lingüístiques, va optar-se per fer un tancament d'un dia per posar en relleu la problemàtica i fer conèixer l'ampli rebuig de la proposta per part de múltiples organitzacions, empreses i personalitats acadèmiques; entre elles, Tim Berners-Lee, creador del WWW, o la mateixa Fundació Wikimedia. Tot i els reiterats advertiments i crítiques durant els subseqüents mesos, especialment per les conseqüències dels articles originals 11 i 13 de la directiva en qüestió, les parts implicades en la confecció de la directiva han preferit fer-ne cas omís fins ara.

Per aquest motiu, i per tal de fer patent la gravetat de la situació, la comunitat d'usuaris de la Viquipèdia en català, juntament amb la d'altres projectes germans Wikimedia en català (Viccionari, Viquidites, Viquillibres, Viquinotícies i Viquitexts) ha optat aquesta ocasió per enfosquir tots els seus llocs web durant tres dies seguits, abans de la que s'espera que sigui la data de votació de la llei al Parlament Europeu.

La Viquipèdia i la resta de projectes Wikimedia poden ser el que són i anar més enllà no només pel contingut que s'hi genera a dins, sinó també gràcies al coneixement lliure que es crea tot al voltant d'Internet i que s'hi comparteix. L'aprovació de la directiva implicaria una Internet més pobra i menys lliure i, per tant, una Viquipèdia molt lluny del que voldríem que fos com a exponent del coneixement humà col·lectiu. Per això demanem a tots els membres del Parlament Europeu que es posicionin obertament, tal com <a href="https://pledge2019.eu/ca"> ja han fet alguns d'ells</a>, en contra de la directiva actual, i en particular dels articles originalment marcats com 11 i 13.
