/** Here we define two simple extension parameters
that will be required in the wikitext to manage / fine tune the desired extension parsing behaviour
Purposes :
1. calling an extension inside a template definition :
In some cases, in order to render a proper output, an extension callback function must have access
to the real value of one or several template arguments (triple braced variables).
This can be achieved with use of the 'checktplargs' parameter : it will tell the
Strip() function that there are some templates arguments to parse BEFORE invoking the corresponding
extension callback function.

2. Extensions nesting cases :
In some cases, when two (or more) extensions are nested, the output of the nested one needs to be
accessible to the callback function of the wrapping one. This is possible thanks to the 'checknestedexts'
parameter that will ensure a proper parsing sequence : It will tell the Strip() function to parse
any nested extension calls before invoking the corresponding extension callbact function.

Note : these two generic extension parameters can also be combined.

### two small hacks (not optimized) by RG 0406 designed to extend extension management ###

## 1. First Hack - RG 110406 - aiming to optimize extension nesting behaviour :
## I added a new object (mStripStateTmp) to the parser class.
## It is updated within the strip() constructor after each extension tag striping process
## in order to allow within each callback, output handling of previously stripped
## nested extension calls.

## 2. Second Hack - RG 150406 - to allow Template arguments handling within
## extensions. The hack is based upon hack by Andreas Neumann, more info at :
## RG hack allows Template Arguments handling INSIDE extension callback functions which was not
## the case with Andreas Hack (simple replacement before passing back to wiki but AFTER extension strip)

Mediawiki 1.7.1[edit]

Is it possible to port this hack to mediawiki 1.7.1. This release (1.7.1) contains the version 1.6.1 of the Parser.php which is different from this version (1.6.0). I suppose the use of php 5 has an impact. Thx. --Ctof 13:45, 7 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I think it is possible. I planned to upgrade my private wiki from 1.6.3 to 1.7.1 so the porting should be done within a month. RG 12:05, 23 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Mediawiki 1.7.1 UPDATE[edit]

I hacked together a version of 1.7.1 that includes this hack.

I also made a small improvement. Instead of creating a new Parser instance, I clone the existing one:

$extparser = clone $this;

That keeps the context the same so that values set within the parent parser context are accessible in the children.

Here's my parser version: http://www.valuewiki.com/parser.txt

One problem I'm constantly dealing with is that the nested parser instances continually try to turn URLs into links. Anything starting with "http" gets turned into a link. This occurs within every parser iteration. The result is that I get a mess of nested anchor tags surrounding any URL. I've overcome this problem in most cases by replacing all "http" strings with the HTML escape characters for those letters on the first parser iteration. This keeps MediaWiki from turning the URL into links multiple times.

This is a huge hassle and causes all sorts of havok. Advice on how to fix this would be most appreciated.

I feel like this like has something to do with a solution, but I'm not smart enough to figure it out:

$text = str_replace($this->mUniqPrefix."NOPARSE", "", $text);

---

I have not visited this page for a while and the automated email-notification system seems to be non-functioning. Thank you for porting my hack to MW 1.7.1 and also for the improvement made ! I will try to fix the URL parsing problem you pointed as soon as possible. RG 00:53, 22 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

A Bug?[edit]

It looks like I'm the only wikier using this hack?

Has anyone else noticed a bug where using a variable in nested templates destroys the value of that variable in the parent template? That means that once you pass a variable into a template, it can no longer be passed into another template at the same level.

  PARENT TEMPLATE: variable=true
     |
     ---- CHILD TEMPLATE: variable=true
     | |
     | ---- GRANDCHILD TEMPLATE: variable=true
     |
     ---- 2ND CHILD TEMPLATE: variable=UNDEFINED

mediawiki 1.9[edit]

I am using mediawiki 1.9 which i think is using parser 1.6.1. when i use Parser from 1.7.1 mediawiki which is linked here(should be Parser 1.6.1) i get this warnings: Warning: Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in Parser.php on line 2468 Warning: array_slice() [function.array-slice]: The first argument should be an array in /opt/lampp/htdocs/wiki/languages/Language.php on line 1105 Could somebody of you help me to solve this problem? I just need to use templates inside extension tags in mediawiki 1.9 version. Thanks

I am about to update my wiki form 1.6.3 to 1.9, so I will release a new version of the hack very shortly (before february 07). RG 00:58, 22 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
That's excellent news. Can't wait Zach 23:34, 19 February 2007 (UTC)Reply
