Nice to meet you[edit]

Hi Rosie, it was very nice to meet you at Wikimania 2015. I hope we'll stay in touch! Greetings, Sandra / Spinster (talk) 08:14, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

@Spinster: Hi Sandra, it was so nice getting to know you at Wikimania, and YES, let's stay in touch. I'm curious to know what have you been working on? What would you like to work on? I see you were a WiR... what was that like... we never did talk about that. I am very interested at the moment in documenting historical international women's conferences and their attendees. I wonder about how they were organized, who attended, what was said, what happened after everyone left. Of course, finding reliable sources and establishing notability are the big hurdles, but I'm pretty tenacious, and there's no real rush, and @SusunW: is also working on this, so slowly, but surely, we are moving forward. Best, Rosie / Rosiestep (talk) 13:42, 28 July 2015 (UTC)

Women in Red query[edit]

At w:Wikipedia:Meetup/Women in Red/4 -- do you know if there are desired articles for redlinks of women scientists that are no longer alive?

It's nice to write a bio page (or any page really) on a particular topic where the writer knows there might not be new significant changes in the future or need for further updates in years to come.

Thank you,

-- Cirt (talk) 04:09, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Cirt. Looking at this list, w:Wikipedia:WikiProject Women/Women in Red/Women science and technology, I see a few have prominent death dates, while others have a death date if you look at the link next to their name (WikiData, other language Wikipedia article, etc.): Annie Maria Armitt, Katharine Bartlett, Vera Gaze, Mary Merrifield, Ida Ørskov, Maria von Linden, and so on. Hope this helps! --Rosiestep (talk) 15:12, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
Perhaps they could be separated in subsections, by those that are still living, and those that are dead? -- Cirt (talk) 00:56, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
@Cirt: Good idea. I'll bring this up on the WiR talkpage: w:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Women/Women in Red#BLP. --Rosiestep (talk) 02:36, 3 November 2015 (UTC)
Thanks very much, feel free to keep me posted. Also, other than bio pages, if there were notable books and such, things with a defined beginning/middle/end points, that's more what I like to work on. For example, I wrote the article on the book by a female author, at Not in Front of the Children. Thanks again for your role in this valuable initiative to address systemic bias, -- Cirt (talk) 05:23, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi Rosiestep,

My name is Jen. I have been working with Lori Brown on the graphic presence of ArchiteXX and WikiD. I understand that WikiWomen is looking to develop a logo, and I would be happy to offer my services. Please feel free to reach out, and we can discuss further to get the ball rolling. I have read the discussion on WikiWomen's talk page and seen the logos developed by Montana and Isarra. Over the next few days I will be sure to familiarize myself with the Wiki Visual identity guidelines to better understand the project's constrains, and how I can be of most use.

Best, Jhg229 (talk) 00:05, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi @Hg229. Thanks for reaching out to me! I'm really looking forward to seeing what you create, and I think the WWUG members are, too. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:47, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

Harassment workshop[edit]

Greetings! You are receiving this message because, at some point in the past, you have participated in a discussion around the topic of harassment. The Support and Safety team is holding a series of consultations gathering feedback on the best potential solutions to the problem. The next stage is a workshop where we hope to narrow the focus to individual actionable ideas and explore how to bring some of these ideas to life.

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

WPCube.png

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

My editing history (sorry for my english)[edit]

Thank you for your comment Rosiestep. As I have already explained to Victuallers, and to other people, I've not been very active on Wikipedia till now, being very engaged first in my studies in Paris and then in my work in Rome. Since my PhD studies at the Political Sciences School in Paris, I've always been a great reader of Wikipedia, and have always been sorry for the gender gap in the women representation. My interest for the gender studies started very early, when for my university degree in 1985 I wrote a thesis about "La Femme et la Révolution française. La Déclaration des droits de la femme et de la citoyenne (1791)". I've started to contribute to the italian Wikipedia in 2012, when I wrote the articles about Joan Wallach Scott and Lynn Hunt. Since then, as Victuallers points out, I have written few articles: Serge Lebovici, Laure Murat, the Asmundo family, Il Conservatorio delle Verginelle, Francesca Leone, Concetta Flore, Fiona Tan... Last year I participated to an Inspire campaign with this idea "Women are everywhere", and now, that I've more time to dedicate to this task, I would love to put it in action. I do not pretend to be an expert in using Wikipedia, but I'm willing to learn and to ask all the necessary help. If the fact that I've not been very active till now on Wikipedia is a problem, I'm ready not to present the project. It would be very kind of you to give me your advise on this point. Grazie--Kenzia (talk) 14:46, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

Plagiarism detection[edit]

Hi! You voted for improving plagiarism detection as an important suggestions in the community wishlist survey last year. I'm pinging people who showed interest in that task to tell them we have some suggestions for how things could look, if you'd like to glance at them and give us some feedback. They're available here: phab:T120435#2266283. It's easiest if comments are left in Phabricator, since that's where much of the development is happening, but they can be left on Meta too, of course. /Johan (WMF) (talk) 17:21, 13 May 2016 (UTC)

Participate in the Inspire Campaign and help address harassment![edit]

NounProject Leaves.png

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

A paper on personal attacks in English Wikipedia[edit]

Hi! You're receiving this message because you signed up as a participant to the m:Research:Detox project. We just wanted to let you know that some of the researchers on the project have released a paper that uses machine learning to analyze some aspects of the nature of personal attacks in English Wikipedia. The paper can be found on arxiv here. If you get the chance to read it, we'd love to hear your thoughts over on the m:Research:Detox page.

Invitation to Training Modules design conversation[edit]

Hello! We are leaving you this message because you have previously indicated that you interested in helping the Wikimedia Foundation Support & Safety team in developing our training modules this year.

We appreciate all the help and thoughts users like you have offered thus far. We would like to encourage you, if you are interested, to participate in the next step of our development: a community consultation about the design and structure of the modules. Note that we're not yet gathering feedback on the content of the modules - a separate consultation about that will be starting soon.

In this "design" consultation, we're looking for advice on things like the best place to host these modules, the accessibility of content, and other potential design decisions. Please feel free to leave any thoughts you have about these things on the talk page. Thanks! Kbrown (WMF) (talk) 18:11, 8 November 2016 (UTC)

2016 Community Wishlist Survey[edit]

Hi,

You’re getting this message because you participated in the 2015 Community Wishlist Survey and we want to make sure you don't miss it this year – or at least can make the conscious choice to ignore if it you want to. The 2015 survey decided what the Community Tech team should work on during 2016. It was also the focus of Wikimedia hackathons and work by other developers. You can see the status of wishes from the 2015 wishlist at 2015 Community Wishlist Survey/Results.

The 2016 Community Wishlist Survey is now open for wishes. You can create proposals until November 20. You will be able to vote on which wishes you think are best or most important between November 28 and December 12. /Johan (WMF) (talk) via MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:17, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

Wikipedia Library User Group is being renamed![edit]

Hello! In the past few months, the Wikipedia Library User Group has been undergoing some major planning and developments. We just finished our very first open call with the user group members, which was a great success (see the meeting minutes). If you joined us during the meeting, we’d like to thank you for your interest. If not, not to worry, we have lots of things planned for the user group in which you can participate.

This message is to inform you that based on the input received from the user group members and the founding members, it was agreed that the Wikipedia Library User Group’s name be reconsidered by a voting process. As a valued member of the user group, we’d like to invite you to vote on the list of potential names. You can vote by following this link. The poll will run for a timeframe of two weeks. WAM Women in Red[edit]

Hi Rosiestep, just so you know: there exists a separate page for Women in Red's subcontest -- feel free to encourage participants to use it if you will use it, or don't if you don't :-) Le Loy 22:17, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Hi Ле Лой - The thing is, I don't want to be a jury member. But I do like promoting the event. --Rosiestep (talk) 22:29, 1 November 2017 (UTC)
That is understandable :-) I can change the jury member to anyone who agrees to do it, it won't take more than a couple of minutes. Ping me if you find someone, OK? Le Loy 23:04, 1 November 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia Asian Month 2017 officially starts![edit]

Dear WAM organizer,

I’m Erick Guan, the coordinator of WAM 2017. Welcome to Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. Here is some information about organizations of events at a national level.

Timeline[edit]

The event lasts a month for the participants. As of the beginning of the event, please:

  • Invite previous participants to join. We have a template you may want to use.
  • Setup your WAM page in your local wikiproject if you haven’t done that.
  • Link your WAM page at Wikipedia Asian Month 2017. It’s important for others to understand and connect to your community! Remove the X when you done that. WAM is organized at national level. So I have to ask you to put your country in front of your name if you haven’t done that.
  • Publish a notification about WAM in site notice as well as village pump. Go public!
  • Connect with us. Generally send me an email so that we can reach you for future information!
  • Become the jury member in a campaign on Fountain which is an amazing tool for you to supervise participants’ articles. If you don’t have the campaign set up, please contact us! And put a link to your community’s campaign page for participants’ navigation.
  • Organize a off-site editathon event. A coffee bar, internet and laptops. Though it’s optional. If you want to do that, please contact me.

In the following days, you should answer the questions from your community and supervise the submissions. Hope you have fun!

Interesting articles[edit]

Have some interesting articles in your mind or from community? Drop us a line so that we can exchange the information to other communities.

Next Diversity Conference[edit]

I tried to find information on a next diversity conference but had no success. Do you know if there is a conference in the future? A related question-Is there a WMF staff member or contractor that is assigned the task of addressing diversity? Best Regards, Barbara (WVS) (talk) 12:21, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

Hi Barbara (WVS). Since the November 2017 Diversity Conference in Stockholm, I haven't heard about plans for the next one. I think many WMF employees address diversity within their roles. For example, I worked with AWang (WMF) on the Gender Diversity Mapping Project. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions in this regard? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:00, 3 February 2018 (UTC)
Hi Barbara (WVS). I don't think there are plans yet for another Diversity Conference. In terms of WMF staff focused on supporting diversity, many of us have elements of our work that address this issue. For example, the Support and Safety Team, the Community Capacity Development project, and the Community Health Initiative. However, there is no one person that is currently solely focused on gender diversity. As Rosie mentioned, we are working together on the Gender Diversity Mapping project. I'm also working with several groups of volunteers on developing other gender diversity projects. As we become more aligned to the strategic vision and the idea of knowledge equity, I hope that more WMF staff have the mandate and time to work in this area. I'm happy to chat about ideas you may have. Best, Alex Wang (WMF) (talk) 17:55, 5 February 2018 (UTC)

The elected steering committee has been meeting twice a month ever since their election, working on the organisation and details of user group functioning. Progress is being made and we'd like to keep the members updated.
  • The committee decided to use the libraries@lists.wikimedia.org and has started making announcements on the list. Please join the list for future announcements and for internal discussions and communications.
  • The latest meeting minutes of the steering committee meeting (May 14-15, 2018) is now available on Meta.

On behalf of the steering committee,

Aaron,

We received 84 responses, and the results can be found on the resources page. In addition to that, there are a few more things we'd like to share with you.

If you are attending Wikimania,

Bon voyage and have a wonderful Wikimania!

If you are not attending Wikimania, we have you covered too!

  • Please help us plan activities for this year by sharing your suggestions on how to implement the top two ideas from the poll results. The discussion is open on the user group talk page.

The Community Wishlist Survey[edit]

Hi,

You get this message because you’ve previously participated in the Community Wishlist Survey. I just wanted to let you know that this year’s survey is now open for proposals. You can suggest technical changes until 11 November: Community Wishlist Survey 2019.

You can vote from November 16 to November 30. To keep the number of messages at a reasonable level, I won’t send out a separate reminder to you about that. /Johan (WMF) 11:25, 30 October 2018 (UTC)

Community health status: full of deep-fried Mars bars[edit]

Open letter on Community Health: "I wanted to mention that regarding the Action Plan, a Community Health Working Group has been established as part of the 2018-20 Wikimedia Movement Strategy and I'm a member of that WG."

What do you guys and gals do? Commons is turning into a battleground with shrapnel flying left and right, do you deal with that kind of thing too? Alexis Jazz (talk) 12:57, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi Alexis Jazz. I am sorry to hear about the troubles on Commons. Here is a link to the Community Health Working Group page on meta, which should give you some idea of our Working Group's focus, as well as activities and reports. --Rosiestep (talk) 14:13, 24 November 2018 (UTC)

Hello Rosiestep! We are happy to announce that the steering committee election 2019 is now open for voting. Because you have joined the user group before 28 February 2019, you are eligible to vote. Not unlike last year, you can vote support for multiple candidates, at most one support for each candidate. Also, oppose votes are not allowed, but discussions are welcome on the talk page.

On behalf of the steering committee,

Aaron,
