Guided tour #1: Editing Wikipedia is easy (working title)

Facts[edit]

  • Status: production underway (shooting on November 19, 2008 in Hamburg)
  • Production: Living Colour, Hamburg
  • Release: first half of December 2008
  • Script: Lennart Guldbrandsson, Frank Schulenburg and the team of Living Colour

The idea behind[edit]

You can't imagine how many people don't know that everyone can edit Wikipedia. You hold a lecture, everybody knows Wikipedia, 90% of the audience uses it daily and suddenly someone asks: "but what happens when I click on the edit button?" Every Wikipedian knows that uploading pictures on commons is too complicated – but obviously clicking the edit button is an even bigger step. That's quite astonishing. Wikipedians tend to live in their Wiki world. They tend to forget about the problems of the "normal" user. To overcome the inhibitions of our readers, to encourage them to click the magic button and to become authors – that's what we want to achieve with the first video.

FADE IN:

INT. WHITE STUDIO – DAY

Theresa, a pleasant and competent woman in her 40's is standing next
to a high table with a TFT-computerdisplay and keyboard. (Proposal:
stylish non-apple-display & keyboard, apple operatingsoftware, firefox
browser.)

	PRESENTER:
Hello, I am Theresa. Nice to meet you here on Wikipedia.
As you may know, Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia that is
written by its users. People like you.
Today, out of the X hundreds of million Wikipedia users, more
than 12 million have contributed to more than 10 million Wikipedia
        articles in 260 languages.

SUPERIMPOSED ANIMATED TEXT:
	”X million users worldwide“
	„12 million editors“
	„10 million articles“
	„260 languages“

	PRESENTER:
It is really easy to start sharing your knowledge on wikipedia,
making it available to the rest of the world and help to
improve the biggest and best free encyclopedia you can find on
        the net.

The presenter turns to the display.

	PRESENTER:
Here I will show you how easy it is.

Closeup of the display as she searches Google for a word („which word“?).
The first hit is the Wikipedia article, which she clicks. The article
appears.

	PRESENTER:
When you search for something on the internet, the first hit you
get is usually Wikipedia. So maybe you want to search it
directly in Wikipedia. Let's look at this.
Most articles on Wikipedia are quite good and up to date. But
still you may find an article, which could be done better and
        you want to improve it.

A few paragraphs down, we see a sign:
“This section is very short. You can help by expanding it.”
It is HIGHLIGHTED by an animated red circle.

	PRESENTER:
This is an invitation to help building an even better
        encyclopedia.

Closeup of the presenter.

	PRESENTER:
In much more than 90% of the cases you don't have to be a
        decorated scientist to do this.
You just need to want to share what you know.
You are only three steps away.
First, you click on the edit button.

SUPERIMPOSE: “Click edit button”

	PRESENTER:
	Then you write the text.

SUPERIMPOSE: “Write the text.”

	PRESENTER:
And finally, you edit the summary and click save.

SUPERIMPOSE: “Edit summary and click save.”

	PRESENTER:
	Simple, isn't it?
And you don’t even have to be logged in and have an account to
        do this.
	So one more time:

Presenter turns to the display, then Closeup of the display.

	PRESENTER:
The first step was the edit button.
Here it is, at the top of the article.

We zoom in on the edit button. The edit button is HIGHLIGHTED by an animated
red circle.

	PRESENTER:
Click the button and you'll come to this page...

The edit page appears. The edit box is HIGHLIGHTED by an animated red circle.

	PRESENTER:
This is where you make your changes.
It may look complicated, but it’s very easy if you concentrate
on the normal Text. When your cursor is placed where you want to
change something, you can simply write or delete like in any common
text processing program. Don't worry, if you do anything wrong, it
is very easy to go back to the previous version.

She adds some words to the text (which words?).

	PRESENTER:
This will do it for this time.

The edit summary box is HIGHLIGHTED by an animated red circle.

	PRESENTER:
Now, here below this area, you edit the summary and briefly
describe your changes, and finally you click this „save page“-
button, to save all your changes.

The “Save page” is HIGHLIGHTED by an animated red circle.
She clicks “Save page”. The normal article reappears.

	PRESENTER:
... and when the article reappears, your changes are instantly
        online and visible.

She scrolls down and finds her new text inserted in the right
place in the article. It is HIGHLIGHTED by an animated red circle.

Closeup of the presenter.

	PRESENTER:
	These three steps...

SUPERIMPOSE:
* Click the „edit“ button
* Write the text
* Edit the summary and save page

	PRESENTER:
... are all it takes to edit Wikipedia.

Presenter points smiling into the camera.

But if you think: „WOW! Now I can rewrite history!“
Then this won’t be a good idea and just a waste of time.
As you will see in another tutorial, several intelligent and
selforganizing control systems assure, that false or weak
information will last only for minutes if not seconds, to make
Wikipedia a reliable and comprehensive encyclopedia.
And remember, it’s people like you who created this wonderful
encyclopedia. So please try to help us and make it even better.
Now it's your turn. Good luck.

She smiles and turns back to the computer.
