Collaboration with institutions

Today, museums, libraries, and archives not only have to preserve our cultural heritage, but to bring it to life digitally. There are Wikipedia articles about many collections and exhibits. Frequently, however, they are missing the corresponding photos. Important potential partners and multipliers work in educational institutions. Collaborating with institutions in the collection and provision of open knowledge is therefore essential.

Offer

Whether you’re conducting an edit-a-thon in a museum, photographically documenting a collection, giving a Wikipedia workshop in a school, or would like to persuade an archive to make its content freely available, Wikimedia Deutschland, Wikimedia Österreich, and Wikimedia CH are happy to assist you with, among other things, the

  • Organization of GLAM-on-Tour events
  • Establishing of contacts with institutions
  • Campaigning for the release of data
  • Provision of official Wikipedia e-mail addresses and business cards
  • Furnishing of editorial acknowledgments
  • Systematic uploading of data donations

Along with cultural institutions, the German-language Wikimedia organizations encourage Wikimedia project volunteers to make collections accessible photographically. The acronym GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives, museums) denotes the activities of volunteers worldwide around culture. To this end, the GLAM on Tour event format was one of the activities developed in German-speaking countries: over a weekend, Wikimedia contributors in your area meet at a museum, an archive, or a library. The staff guide you through the collections, where the objects may be photographed. Afterwards, the pictures can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. When furnished with appropriate categories, entire collections can be procured in this way for Wikimedia projects and made accessible to the public. On a smaller scale, there is also the KulTour format. In recent years, volunteers have produced more than 10,000 photos for Wikimedia Commons relating to culture, adding them to open knowledge. Don’t hesitate to get involved yourself!
