BHouse (WMF) 2018-06-04 Trilogy contractor, required for work on fundraising banners. M:Central Notice Admin
I JethroBT (WMF) 2018-05-01 In the immediate term, this is to take care moving pages in the Grants: namespace. Many of these pages are translated. For ongoing work, Inspire Campaigns typically require translation preparation and fine-tuning (i.e. participants request or point out errors in translation mid-campaign). M:Translation Admin
JTrost (WMF) 2018-05-01 Trilogy contractor, required for work on fundraising banners. M:Central Notice Admin
I JethroBT (WMF) 2018-04-09 Sending messages related to Inspire campaigns to idea creators to let them know about an update regarding grant eligibility. Granted without expiry as this is a commonly-requested right for his work in a support role for grant officers. Other/Special (See use case)
MusikAnimal (WMF) 2018-04-01 These rights will assist me in deploying the Page Assessments to several wikis. For this, we need to update some protected templates. For every wiki, I'm asking a local template editor handle it, but I'd like to be able to intervene if something goes wrong (repeated mistakes may cause a high number of jobs to fired, and possibly causing database issues). G:Interface Editor
TSkaff (WMF) 2018-02-12 I work on the online fundraising team and sometimes assist Jessica Robell in various capacities relating to translation. M:Translation Admin
Ed Erhart (WMF) 2018-02-07 Following the policy, I'm requesting the upload wizard campaign user right ("upwizcampeditors") on Wikimedia Commons on an ongoing basis. The digital media team has done some experimenting recently with using social media to encourage photo uploads, the most recent of which has been focused on pigeons.

I believe that being able to create upload campaigns for these periodic initiatives will make it easier for people to upload their content while also lessening any potential burden on volunteers. Creating a campaign has, in fact, been suggested for both of our previous campaigns in discussions on Commons' Village Pump. (1, 2)

Other/Special (See use case)
CParle (WMF) 2017-11-15 Testing file upload process; testwiki does not currently allow this for new users. Reviewer right is not available to grant Other/Special (See use case)

CSteigenberger (WMF) 2017-09-13 I'd like to request translationadmin rights for Christel on my team. She is assisting with translation markup on some of our team pages, and those of the AHT team to help with German-language outreach. She will need the rights in the future as well for team duties. M:Translation Admin
MWang (WMF) 2017-08-31 I’m seeking rights to view the text of deleted revisions on all wikis for my [Aaron H.] collaborator Morten Warncke-Wang in order to extract data used to train ORES models and to do other research. Morten has a formal relationship with me and the Research dept. at the Wikimedia Foundation. The access duration would be tied to Morten's current MOU/NDA with the Wikimedia Foundation. The deleted text will be extracted on a stat* machines within our analytics cluster, and we’ll probably train models and perform analyses on the same machine, so the text won’t be copied anywhere else. Other/Special (See use case)
Awight (WMF) 2017-08-28 I’m seeking rights to view the text of deleted revisions on all wikis, in order to extract data used to train ORES models. Currently, AHalfaker is the only member of our team with this access, and I’d like to be able to take on some of that workload in his place. The access duration would be indefinite, since this is a task we have to perform regularly. The deleted text will be extracted on a stat* machine, and we’ll probably train the model on the same machine, so the text won’t be copied anywhere else. Other/Special (See use case)
VColeman (WMF) 2017-08-18 No use case provided. G:Staff
AVasanth (WMF) 2017-08-09 Since we have a global audience that would benefit from different language versions of pages like guides, newsletters and processes, and there are coordinators who are willing to do the translations, the only thing in between us is we can't get the pages marked for translations, not in time. Also, the queue for translation is quite long, it prevents us from effectively reaching out and being of use to our potential audience. M:Translation Admin
CSteigenberger (WMF) 2017-07-14 Christel serves as a responder to the emergency@ list, which includes needing to view deleted revisions, access the checkuser and oversight tools, etc. She also serves in the larger Trust & Safety team which assists in carrying out legal process or takedowns. G:Staff

NTymkiv (WMF) 2016-07-12 I would like to request an admin flag on wikimediafoundation.org to help with cleaning there (for example, with Category:Deletion requests etc). Apparently you do not grant adminship to volunteers, so I am requesting it for my official account as a Board member. Other/Special (See use case)
Delphine (WMF) 2016-07-01 My work on meta has increased a lot in the past few days, and will surely increase even more. Which leads to moving pages around, deleting old redirects and obsolete templates etc. I therefore write to ask to have admin rights on meta, so that I don't leave a mess behind me when I'm crazily editing away portal pages for the FDC (and whatnots). I was an admin on meta with my volunteer account for... 10 years I suppose (User:notafish), I am still an admin on Commons and while I have to read all the translations pages thoroughly to understand how that really works, I believe I have a bit of experience. Mvolz (WMF) 2016-05-25 I need full edit permissions on all language wikis for the Template namespace. I need to edit template data in these templates in order to properly configure citoid on these wikis. Here is the phabricator task to do so: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T114515 Often these are editable but on some language wikis they are locked for editing.

I've been getting a colleague to do some on wiki edits for me and he finally got fed up and suggested I get my own permissions :).

It would be also great if I had the ability to edit MediaWiki namespace on all language wikis. This is to configure this message and this message only on all wikis: https://zh.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Citoid-template-type-map.json

Tbayer (WMF) 2013-02-01 My name is Tilman Bayer, and I work on the Communications team, with a focus on the area of Movement Communications. As part of my job, I frequently need to use the extended user rights of my staff account on Meta-Wiki, e.g. to manage translations in the Translate Extension, send translation notifications, post and manage movement-wide announcements using the CentralNotice extension, and import pages. Based on my language and community knowledge, I have also been granted global staff rights in order to be able to occasionally help the LCA team with timely requests - specifically those sent to the emergency@ contact point and referring to German-language wikis - where Oversight and/or Checkuser rights are needed to evaluate information that had to be hidden from public view (example from a past such request: https://de.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?diff=110069584&oldid=110069555 ). Finally, in certain cases where article disputes come under media attention and involve deleted content, the ability to view such content as non-public background information can greatly enhance our team's ability to navigate press requests. G:Staff
Jlohr (WMF) 2013-01-24 As part of my job, I am expected to be able to update staff pages and WMF pages regarding staff policies. Because this is stored in the "MediaWiki" namespace on each individual wiki, I need the global ability to edit pages in the MediaWiki namespace. This ability is limited to the "staff" user right. Additionally, I am expected to stand in for Gayle as needed for advice on emergency@ responses and need to be able to see edits and users involved. G:Staff

It has been successfully rolled out, however as a user with deployment right, I still need to edit system messages from time to time, sometimes even urgently. G:Sysadmin
Awjrichards (WMF) It is not very common, but there have been times when I've had to edit things in the Mediawiki namespace (CSS/JS/messages) on a number of our projects. So if I do need staff rights for that, I need to keep them.

Aside from that, I'm not sure what else I do that I would need them for - I primarily just edit regular article and talk pages across our wikis. It's possible I've taken advantage of my staff rights for other job-related duties that I wasn't aware I needed staff rights for, but I'm not sure what they are - and I'm sure those rights aren't exercised very often. It's also possible that those activities were unique to my previous roles on the fundraising team.

Jdforrester (WMF) As part of my "Admin tools" work, I need to be able to view/edit/see the logs of (a) AbuseFilters on meta and (b) the new global AbuseFilters once they're there too.

Right now I believe (a) is only given to meta +sysops, +Stewards and +Sysadmins; (b) is only given to +sysadmins for now and will be given to +Stewards in a few days/weeks once we're sure it works.

However, as I'm in none of these groups I can't test that the features work and help work out what's gone wrong if the tool breaks, which is a bit of a pain. Some options:

  • Add editing AbuseFilters (and, in time, editing global AbuseFilters) to +staff - but presumably there's a reason that we don't allow staff that right?
  • Add me to +Steward (eww)
  • Add me to +Sysadmin (least-bad option?)

NOTE: +SYSADMIN WAS GRANTED

Reedy (WMF) Reedy is required as part of his role to do global maintenance work across any and all of the WMF wikis. This means that he needs global editinterface and other rights available in the sysadmin group of rights. G:Sysadmin
Ryan Kaldari (WMF) As a senior developer Ryan needs rights for troubleshooting and testing purposes G:Sysadmin
Guillaume (WMF) As part of his job Guillaume is frequently asked to use the extended user rights of his staff account on Meta-Wiki and cross project , e.g. to manage translations in the Translate Extension, send translation notifications, post and manage movement-wide announcements using the CentralNotice extension or other systems, and import pages. Based on his language and community knowledge, he also uses

global staff rights in order to occasionally help the LCA team with timely requests - specifically those sent to the emergency@ contact point and referring to French-language wikis - where Oversight and/or Checkuser rights are needed to evaluate information that had to be hidden from public view.
