WWC2023/Program/Strategy/Engagement Plan

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Context for the Engagement Plan[edit]

  • The goal of the sessions is co-create a collaborative engagement plan that redefines representation of women+ in Wikimedia projects
  • The purpose of the engagement plan would be to raise awareness and consciousness about the gender gap, and start to move the needle towards gender equity.
  • The movement-wide engagement plan would be created by us: the women+ of Wikimedia.
  • The plan would be for the next two years, with a checkpoint at the 2024 Wikimania.

Phased Approach during the WikiWomenCamp[edit]

  1. Map – the first session was an invitation to all the Camp participants to identify and map the dreams and ideas of the different events and activities we could do as a collective. The ideas ranged from social activities, like a book club, a mentoring/buddy program to train or offer support amongst the Wiki women+ community, and bi-monthly calls to connect; to educational and training activities, like annual trainings for all admins on gender sensitivity, a training course for admin rights and tools to equip and empower more women+ to become admins, and training course on Commons for female+ photographers; to Wiki-project specific activities, like increase content diversity using the PAC2 tool and working on providing Wiki project women’s health in multiple languages; to strategy activities, like convene a steering committee (or working group) to advance the hub pilot proposal and advancing the research on the gender gap.
  2. Prioritize – the second session ended up being an adjustment from the original plan; the strategy cohort focused on dreaming of what the Wikimedia movement looks like in 5 years, and mapping out what we needed to do to get there.
  3. Rise Up – the third session involved sharing out both the proposed activities aggregated from the Camp participants and the 5-year visions that the strategy cohort breakouts groups identified which will make up the engagement plan, and inviting everyone (those present at the Camp and those who weren’t) to rise up and volunteer to coordinate or contribute to make those proposed activities a reality!

Outcomes[edit]

  • As a result of these sessions, there was a proposed Declaration statement that includes recommendations representing our commitment to fostering an inclusive, diverse, and equitable community. This Declaration is open for consultation by the global community.
  • Alongside the Declaration, we published the list of proposed activities curated so far for anyone to sign up to contribute, as well as inviting new proposals for activities we should be doing to raise awareness of the gender gap and work towards gender equity.

Proposed Activities[edit]

Call to action #1: if you're currently doing something cool to address the gender gap and/or work towards gender equity, please share with us! Add it to the table, so others can learn about it too!

Call to action #2: if you're interested in coordinating or contributing to an activity below, please drop your username in the "volunteers" column. Coordinating means you want to organize and lead the other contributors in this effort, and that you'll be the point of contact if others have questions. The support staff (both the WWC CoT and the WMF staff) are available to assist and answer questions!
