What is your idea?

The Basque Education Program has been working for some time now. So far it has focused on teacher training, student proliferation to grow Wikipedia and to identify and strengthen the items that are used in education, in order to improve the educational tool that is Wikipedia.

In 2022, from the Basque Wikimedians User Group, we have taken a step further by starting to create free pedagogical videos to strengthen Wikipedia and increase the space for the pedagogical dimension of the free encyclopedia project.

So far all the videos we have created have been in Basque, but we believe that this initiative has potential for other linguistic communities, and we want to offer the material freely so that audio can be added in other languages. We believe that this project has more potential with the Wikimedia philosophy: sharing the work and co-creating collaboratively.

We want to launch a pilot project with the videos of the six philosophers, so that they can be dubbed into other languages and multiply their impact:

  2. René Descartes
  3. Immanuel Kant
  4. Friedrich Nietzsche
  5. Hannah Arendt
  6. Simone de Beauvoir

Apart from the six videos of the 2022 edition, we are now producing another six for the year 2023, with this initiative we will also put in a version without voice, but with effects, the archives of the second edition. These authors are foreseen: Aristotle, Marx, Mary Wollstonecraft, Sally Haslanger, Bell Hocks and Foucault.


Why is it important?

With this push, we will be able to take the material to another level, and it can be used for other Wikipedia communities. The media consumption habits of teenagers are clearly audiovisual, in turn, students are in the habit of accessing Youtube and Wikipedia in educational contexts. Adding the audiovisual layer in the free encyclopedia is an important qualitative step. Even more so if we leverage other language projects to strengthen the entire Wikimedia community.

The "Wikimedia's Strategy 2030" insists on fighting the disinformation of the traditional audiovisual media, the encyclopedia of the 21st century also has to join the audiovisual battle, both by influencing media education, and by teaching with examples, that free culture, the OER, have an emancipatory potential to make the free multi-language encyclopedia a reality.

Is your project already in progress?

The Ikusgela project (audiovisual classroom in Basque), is a project led by the Basque Wikimedians User Group, which seeks alliances throughout the education ecosystem. It is in progress, creating and disseminating pedagogical videos in diverse areas, but, at the moment, it does not have the strength to take these materials to other linguistic communities. With this project we want to launch a pilot project that will be of great importance to measure the options and create links between different communities of free encyclopedias.


How is this project relevant to credibility and Wikipedia?

A multimedia encyclopedia, with the option to read or watch an explanatory video, aligns with current consumer habits, and reinforces an image of credibility.

The pedagogical videos are made in collaboration with teachers, all the images used are free (mostly from Commons), and they affect a positive perception of Wikipedia as a serious tool for educational environments.


What is the ultimate impact of this project?

Creating the first multi-language educational audiovisual series, to be an example and mirror for future collaborations in this field. Strengthening the collaboration of different Wikipedia communities, and responding to a specific reality in which teenagers are informed by audiovisual media. Besides, in minority languages, it is a golden opportunity to get ahead of other hegemonic audiovisual projects, and offer the best material in a free and collaborative way.


Can your project scale?

Yes, this project (Ikusgela) has just started and has a vocation to grow. Both systematizing the dubbing and subtitling of materials created in Basque, as well as devising new projects that are multilingual from their embryo. This project is a first step towards more ambitious collaborations in the medium term.


Why are you the people to do it?

Within the Education Program we are in an active context of strengthening Wikipedia with educational agents and we have just started to create and distribute the pedagogical videos. We are in a good position to make the leap and try to take advantage of the material for other linguistic communities, emphasizing the multiplicity of the project.

By having an active community of wikimedians, we have active ties in other linguistic communities and we can make that collaboration happen.


What is the impact of your idea on diversity and inclusiveness of the Wikimedia movement?

In the field of diversity, this project focuses on the equality of materials in minority languages, since, apart from English, we want to promote the translation of educational materials into minority and endangered languages. All the elements of the videos have been made with the idea of diversity, both in the illustrations of the bodies and in the fight against sexist stereotypes. Two of the philosophers to be translated are women of reference who until now have been in the background in the field of philosophy. For example, with the video of Simone de Beauvoir, a direct contribution is made to equal opportunities and feminism.

In terms of accessibility, offering an audiovisual layer, with subtitles, offers a new consumption option for many people who cannot consult the written encyclopedia.


What are the challenges associated with this project and how you will overcome them?

Today, the systematic work of promoting Wikipedia in education and creating audiovisual resources is enough for the team. Therefore, if we opt for this support, we will be able to obtain the videos without the voice-over and try to pilot the reuse of the material in other languages.


How will you spend your funds?
  1. Optimization of the videos so that they can be doubled (12 x 400). 4800$
  2. Coordination with 3 other Wikipedia communities to encourage dubbing. 2200$
  3. Subtitling and dubbing into a language as a guide (6 x 400). 2400$


How long will your project take?

These are the three phases of the project presented:

  1. January-February: Identify and coordinate with interested languages for translation.
  2. March-April: Create the multilingual archives.
  3. May: Promote this initiative to other video and Wikipedia communities.
