What is your idea?

The project intends to capture verifiable data on Nigerian electoral results, the cleared candidate and cities, towns, and wards where the election will take place on Wikipedia and its sister project.

We will achieve this through; campaigns and edit-a-thons.

Why is it important?

The project is important because of the followings:

  1. Nigeria is the largest and most diverse country in Africa
  2. Nigeria General election happens every 4years, the next is February 2023
  3. The project will ensure users of Wikipedia and its sister projects can track authentic information about the election
  4. As the largest country in Africa, the project helps to boost visibility of the cities, towns and location

The project will work with language-based affiliates in Nigeria, e.g. Igbo Wikimedians, Yoruba Wikimedians UG and Hausa Wikimedians UG and any other mission-aligned organisation that could be of help to the success of the project.

What are the challenges associated with this project and how you will overcome them?

Challenges

  1. 80% of the related data from the Nigerian General election do not conform to structural data,e.g. names and photos of the cleared candidates for the election and profiles of the individual candidates.
  2. +60% of the notable names cleared by INEC for the general election do not have Wikipedia pages, and their photos are unavailable under CCBYSA-4.0.
  3. The information about cities, towns and locations in Nigeria, Africa's largest nation, is not well shared in the public domain and available for educational and research purposes.
  4. There are difficulties with recruiting volunteers to work on the project.
  5. Lack of funding to engineer the essential tasks of the project objective.
  6. The need to draw the attention of stakeholders to the need to push National data into the public domain.

Solutions

  1. The project will work with Wikidata enthusiasts in the movement to create new items and improve the existing data about the Nigeria electioneering project for the year 2023.
  2. The project will run a series of edit-a-thons to create and improve profiles of the cleared candidate on Wikipedia and its sister projects.
  3. We will partner original owner of photos of the mentioned people to release their images under CCBYSA-4.0
  4. We ensure volunteers do not incur out-of-pocket expenses in discharging their tasks on the project. We provide participants with local travel, data/internet subsidies, refreshment during the edit-a-thon, and gift for the highest campaign contributors and edit-a-thon.
  5. Initiate various advocacy initiatives,e.g. meetings, seminars, talks and campaigns, to engage stakeholders on the benefit of releasing content into the public domain. We will source funds for the execution of the project from mission-aligned organisations.
