OVERVIEW[edit]

The WikiFemme Learning Lab in Kano is an initiative aimed at empowering women and girls in Nigeria to actively participate in the Wikimedia community. Through workshops and training sessions, the Lab teaches digital literacy, Wikipedia editing, and contributions to Wikimedia Commons, fostering a supportive environment for women to enhance their skills and contribute to a diverse online knowledge base.

MISSION[edit]

The mission of the WikiFemme Learning Lab in Kano is to:

  1. Empower Women: Equip women with skills to contribute to Wikimedia projects.
  2. Bridge the Gender Gap: Increase female participation in free knowledge creation.
  3. Promote Digital Literacy: Enhance women's digital and research skills.
  4. Create a Supportive Community: Build a network of female Wikimedia contributors.
  5. Enhance Local Content: Improve the representation of Kano and Nigeria on Wikimedia projects.

Project Highlight[edit]

The project is a three-day program designed to empower women in Kano to actively engage in the Wikimedia community. The highlight of the project includes:

  1. Day 1 (Physical Event): Introduction to Wikimedia projects, hands-on training on Wikipedia editing, Wiktionary and a session on digital literacy skills.
  2. Day 2 (Physical Event): Advanced editing techniques, contributions to Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, collaborative projects, and networking opportunities.
  3. Day 3 (Online Event): Virtual workshop focused on refining skills, Q&A sessions with experienced Wikimedia contributors, and a review of participants' contributions.

Target Participants[edit]

The project targets women aged 18-above who are interested in digital literacy and content creation. It includes female students from secondary schools and universities, educators and librarians, and professionals seeking to enhance their digital skills. Community leaders are also targeted to help disseminate knowledge further. This diverse group aims to improve local content representation on Wikimedia projects.
