Description

[edit]

Please add description of the request, with all the necessary details.

Thirty years after the African children's Charter was adopted, African governments are still failing to protect children from violence. Child abuse in Africa is a major threat to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals for nation building. The case of child abuse especially of the growing children is rising on daily basis. A current research evidence holds that Africa has the highest rate of child abuse in the world. The research holds that about 41.8% of girls and 39.1% of boys were neglected by their caregivers, family members and others. In most countries of Africa, for example in Nigeria, child abuse and neglect is prevalent in every day life of a child but it receives little or no attention by the society.

These children suffer the indignity of rape, sexual harassment, intimidation, early marriage, harmful traditional practices, child street begging and others; hence, vigorous action must be taken to tackle these unacceptable scourge of violence against African children using Wikipedia related articles for Edit-a-thon and Translate-a-thon.

This event will be happening among Federal University of Technology Owerri, students, who had wished to be in Morocco for the Africa WikiIndaba conference (2023) but they were not selected. This will be a mini in-house conference, which seeks to increase the visibility of children's Right in Africa by editing the Wikipedia pages, so that children's rights would be respected.

It will be a one day in-house mini conference. The organizer will speak extensively on children's rights and its effect on the African child. There will be a one week content translation in igbo contest. We shall be working on articles relating to: Right to life (10) Articles, Right to good health (10) Articles, Right to good nutrition (10) Articles, Right to good education (10) Articles, and Right to safety (10) Articles . The total articles to be worked on are (50).

Jury decision

[edit]

Dear Onwuka Glory and colleagues from The Wiki for Human Rights Project,

We are sincerely grateful for the time and effort you invested in applying for a micro-grant for WikiIndaba 2023. Your interest in contributing to this event is highly appreciated.

Unfortunately, we have to inform you that your application was not selected for the micro-grant. We received an overwhelming number of quality applications (77 applications for only 7 grants), which made the decision process extremely challenging. Given the constraints, our focus has been on projects from underrepresented communities or groups that lack on-site representation at the conference. The team decided therefore to provide the grants only to countries where there are no user groups at the moment.

Though your application was not selected, we greatly value your interest in WikiIndaba 2023. To stay engaged and catch all the latest updates, we invite you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter and instagram. Additionally, we encourage you to subscribe to our YouTube channel, where we'll be sharing conference highlights and key sessions. We also suggest reaching out to your group members who will be participating in the conference, so they can share experiences and learnings with you.

Best regards,

Organizing Committee, WikiIndaba Conference 2023 -- WikiIndaba2021 (talk) 14:52, 11 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
