Report on the Participation of Joris Darlington Quarshie at WikiIndaba 2023 in Agadir, Morocco

Overview[edit]

Provide insights into your participation at the conference, including details about your contributions, experiences, and noteworthy encounters.

I actively participated in Wikindaba, facilitating two sessions:

  • Streamlining workflows with Wikimedia Phabricator: This session introduced participants to Phabricator, a tool used for development tasks on Wikimedia projects. I covered basic usage, contributing to tasks, and navigating the platform.
  • Wikimedia Tool documentation: This session focused on writing and improving documentation for Wikimedia tools. I discussed best practices, resources, and the importance of clear and accessible documentation.

I also attended several sessions, including:

  • Collaboration Structures and Models for Africa (A.K.A. Hubs): This session explored different collaboration models for African Wikimedians.
  • How can the UCoC serve communities in Africa?: This session discussed the Universal Code of Conduct and its implementation in African communities.
  • Wiki4Inclusion Project; Open Knowledge for all and by All: This session explored the Wiki4Inclusion project, which aims to make Wikimedia projects more inclusive.
  • Ghanaian Meetup at Ndaba: This meetup focused on the progress and future of Wikimedians in Ghana, including collaborations and partnerships.
  • Lets Connect and the Future of Peer Learning in the Wikimedia Movement: This session explored the future of peer learning in the Wikimedia movement and how it can be used to support new and experienced editors alike.
  • The Villa Karo Wiki-Experience: This session presented the unique wiki project documenting the history and culture of the Villa Karo, a historic building in Benin.
  • Wiki Loves Monuments organizers Q&A: This session provided an opportunity for Wiki Loves Monuments organizers to share their experiences and ask questions.
  • Growth and Editing Tools for Newcomers: This session explored tools and strategies for attracting and retaining new editors.
  • Using Kiwix as a tool to enhance equitable access to educational resources in Africa: This session discussed how Kiwix, an offline Wikipedia reader, can be used to provide access to information in areas with limited internet connectivity.
  • How the new campaign tools can help your Wikimedia events: This session introduced participants to the new campaign tools available to Wikimedia communities.

Outcome[edit]

What significant learning or outcome do you take away from your participation?

My participation in Wikindaba provided valuable learning opportunities:

  • Enhanced understanding of collaboration models: I gained insights into different collaboration models used by African Wikimedia communities, which can be applied to improve collaboration in Ghana.
  • Improved knowledge of UCoC implementation: The discussion on the UCoC helped me understand its implications for African communities and how to implement it effectively.
  • Inspiration for Wiki4Inclusion: The Wiki4Inclusion project provided inspiration for initiatives to make the Ghanaian Wikimedia community more inclusive.
  • Strengthened networks: I built connections with Wikimedians from other countries, opening doors for future collaboration and support.

Impact[edit]

What impact the conference had on you and community plans, and what actions will you undertake to share learnings with your community?

Wikindaba has had a significant impact on me and my plans for the Ghanaian Wikimedia community:

  • Sharing learnings: I plan to share my learnings from the conference with the Ghanaian community through workshops, presentations, and online discussions.
  • Promoting collaboration: I will encourage collaboration between Ghanaian Wikimedians and other African communities, based on the connections made at Wikindaba.
  • Advocating for inclusion: I will advocate for initiatives that promote inclusivity within the Ghanaian Wikimedia community, inspired by the Wiki4Inclusion project.

The conference was well-organized and provided a great opportunity for Wikimedians from all over Africa to connect and learn from each other. I would highly recommend attending Wikindaba to anyone interested in the Wikimedia movement in Africa.
