Abstract:
We aim at bringing together a community that shares a concern for language justice in the African continent, and think deeply about how Wikipedian’s contributions are being used in the context of LLMs (that are fed with content from the global encyclopedia), how to expand the presence of Tigrinya and other African languages on Wikipedia, and what does it entail to rely on machine translations for African languages (especially for low-resourced, mainly oral languages). |

How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region?
Multiple efforts exist in the Wikimedia community to support linguistic diversity. With this initiative, we would like to bring to the center the specific discussions and concerns of language communities in Africa and generate a space for conversations on emerging issues, such as the impact of LLMs. |
