Abstract: This a presentation about initiatives to promote free knowledge and open access in Africa Great Lakes. The Rwanda wikimedia user group has been collaborating with other Wikimedia User Group Communities in the region to carry out movement strategy, skills development, and needs assessment.Identified key challenges and opportunities for improving access to free knowledge across the region and working towards developing innovative solutions for enhancing the participation of under represented communities in the movement. In terms of skills development, the group has been conducting training sessions and workshops to equip local communities with the skills and knowledge needed to participate effectively in the Wikimedia movement. Fostering a culture of knowledge-sharing, collaboration, and innovation among young people in Africa Great Lakes. Through needs assessment activities, we gathered information from different communities on their specific needs and challenges in accessing and contributing to free knowledge projects and they proposed solutions tailored to meet the unique needs and in context . How will this session be beneficial for the communities in the region? Firstly, the talk will provide the WikiIndaba community audience with an in-depth understanding of how user groups can collaborate and work together to promote free knowledge and open access. It will also demonstrate how Wikimedia Foundation can leverage the power of community-driven initiatives to support its mission of sharing knowledge initiatives. Secondly, the talk will offer insights on how to conduct a successful needs assessment in order to identify the specific challenges and opportunities faced by different communities, which will help the Wikimedia communities to develop tailored solutions to address the unique needs of different user groups. Some of the communities have not yet worked on MSIG I hope that they will love to hear more about , opportunities, Challenges and insights about the Movement strategy Implementation grant situation. they will learn from our gaps and challenge which will help them to do it better and make African communities proud.
