Abstract:

The need for community engagement and inclusive participation has created spaces for diversity and collaboration. It goes a long way towards indicating that everyone has something to offer and that no one should be left behind. It is also one of the nuances of the Movement Strategy of Wikimedia and the mantra for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The Anambra Network of Wikimedia User Group Nigeria embraced these global practices, created spaces and mapped out strategies for innovative activities. This article looks at the unique inclusive membership of the Network, the strategic initiatives, the selected venues for the different activities and the output within its 20 months of existence. The Anambra Network is still growing with members that comprise professors, higher degree holders, faculty members, students, entrepreneurs, media personnel, artisans and stay-at-home moms. This unique combinations were factored into the activities of the Network, where open knowledge is regularly shared. The activities were spaced out at different venues on campuses, public libraries and reading centers, and restaurants with collaborative activities. The planned activities included various kinds of Wikimedia projects that allow the unique combinations of the members to contribute and participate fully. Imbibing these diversified features earned the Network, the award for the best community in Wikimedia User Group Nigeria in 2023 and another award as the Network for the most participants in Naija Office Hour in 2023. It is also the Network adjudged for consistent members at every event since its inception. The Network is the only one that is allowed to offer special “child care” support to mothers who come for training and activities with their babies. Thus, diversity and inclusion always create spaces for strategic initiatives -->
